Mayan Train: Military engineers go for another mega project in the country

The federal government plans the construction of a fuel loading and storage center that will operate in conjunction with the Maya cargo trainand whose design and construction will be carried out by military engineers from the Felipe Ángeles Group, the same one that built the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).

The new center seeks to meet a growing logistics demand in the southeast, where the lack of storage terminals has generated dependence on a single supply point and higher operating expenses.

If realized, The work will be integrated into the Mayan Freight Train railway scheme and will expedite the movement of goods and energy to Quintana Roo and neighboring states..

The announcement was made by President Claudia Sheinbaum herself, noting that the goal is to reduce transportation costs and, eventually, gasoline prices in the peninsula region of the country.

The president explained that during the tour to supervise the progress of the Mayan Cargo Train, she was struck by the fact that in various areas of Quintana Roo the price of fuel exceeds 24 pesos per liter, even at Pemex franchise gas stations, despite the voluntary agreement with businessmen to keep the price at a maximum of 23.99 pesos.

“We visited the progress of the Mayan Cargo Train; it is a very important work. The Mayan Cargo Train goes along the passenger train tracks, but requires its own spaces for storage and exchange of goods. It caught my attention that some areas of Quintana Roo have gasoline for more than 24 pesos.”

He added: “I spoke with Profeco and Pemex. In the southeast, part of the fuel arrives through Puerto Progreso, in Yucatán, and there are very few storage terminals, if not only those in Progreso. From there the pipes travel to the south of Quintana Roo, which makes transportation more expensive,” he explained.

He stated that the government is working, in coordination with the Felipe Ángeles Group and military engineers, on the design of this new terminal, which will be part of the infrastructure of the Mayan Cargo Train.

“With the Mayan Cargo Train we want to build a fuel storage center. This will reduce the cost of transportation. This is a very important project for the entire peninsula,” he said.

The president reiterated that this project responds to the need to balance fuel prices and strengthen the region’s energy infrastructure, as part of the strategy to consolidate connectivity and economic development in the southeast of the country.

Work on the Mayan cargo train began last April, with an initial investment of 25 billion pesos (about $1.25 billion).

The Mayan Train is a work of 1,553 kilometers of tracks that former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) prioritized, for the five southeastern states: Campeche, ChiapasQuintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán.
