McDonald’s gets a lot of hate for being unhealthy. And while you probably shouldn’t eat it every day, there’s about to be a new option that puts veggies front and center. Starting September 16, you’ll be able to order the brand-new McVeggie, featuring a breaded patty made with a medley of carrots, zucchini, green beans, broccoli, corn, peas, and soybeans. What’s the catch? It’s only available in Canada.
This nationwide release follows testing in New Brunswick, British Columbia, and Ontario. The patty comes on a sesame seed bun with shredded lettuce and a creamy mayo-style sauce, or you can kick it up with a spicy habanero version. Order it solo or as an Extra Value Meal with McDonald’s iconic fries. If you’re feeling a little guilty about your fast-food habits, this new item might not make you feel so bad.
New Menu Items Are Coming This September
It’s about to get interesting over at the Golden Arches in the Great White North. Aside from the new McVeggie sandwich, McDonald’s has a few more outside-the-box options planned for release.
Francesca Cardarelli, McDonald’s Canada’s Chief Marketing Officer, said the McVeggie reflects a push to offer more inclusive menu items. She called it “a celebration of bold flavour” and a way to meet the evolving tastes of Canadian customers.
On September 16, you’ll also be able to order a grilled cheese Happy Meal as well as a lettuce-and-tomato snack wrap Happy Meal at some locations. Earlier in the year, the fast-food chain rolled out Oat Beverage for select McCafé drinks.

Will the McVeggie Come to the U.S.?
You probably already know McDonald’s locations around the world each have unique menu items, and U.S. test runs don’t always last. Unfortunately, stateside testing didn’t show much interest in plant-based burgers.
A few years ago, McDonald’s gave the McPlant burger a limited run, but it was quickly discontinued due to low sales and lack of demand. Vegetarians and vegans have long been waiting for a proper veggie burger from McDonald’s, but other fast-food chains have stepped in with more reliable options, like Burger King’s Impossible Whopper and Carl’s Jr.’s Zucchini Star Burger which replaced the Beyond Burger.
This new veggie-based patty from McDonald’s may have a different fate, though, especially now that some lab-created meats are being banned in certain states. For now, the McVeggie is a Canada-only deal, and it’s one worth crossing the border for.
