Meag, the asset manager of Munich Re and ERGO, has launched a new fund focused on European data centers. This decision comes at a time when demand for digital infrastructure is increasing rapidly due to growing data needs. The fund, which operates under the name “Meag Volante DC Investor SCSp”, is aimed exclusively at professional investors and starts with well-known initial investors such as Siemens Financial Services and Munich Re.
Data centers have become a central part of the digital infrastructure as they form the basis for cloud services, AI applications and many other data-intensive technologies. Meag sees this area as a rare opportunity to benefit from long-term demand and limited supply. The investments focus on locations in Germany and Switzerland that are powered entirely by renewable energy, which underlines the fund’s sustainability claim.
The complexity of data center investments requires specialized partnerships. Meag has therefore founded a joint venture with a sovereign wealth fund and Vantage Data Centers to ensure the technical expertise and the necessary know-how for design, operation and scaling. This collaboration offers investors access to an asset class that is otherwise difficult to access and creates planning security with a target return of over 10 percent.
Since 2022, Meag has invested around one billion euros in digital infrastructure, with a large part of this sum going into data centers. These investments reflect the changing market, with energy-intensive, technology-driven platforms increasingly coming into focus. With assets under management of 363 billion euros, Meag is well positioned to further expand this segment and use digitalization as a growth driver.
