Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said this Sunday that the today’s meeting between the Brazilian and North American presidents was “very positive” and “very productive”, in a context of tensions due to the tariffs imposed on Brasília.
“It was 45 minutes of very positive, very productive conversation. The presidents dealt with all the issues”, said Vieira at the end of the meeting between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his North American counterpart, Donald Trump, on the sidelines of the summit of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
According to Mauro Vieira, Trump committed to “instructing his team to begin a bilateral negotiation process” around the rates, with the two leaders opening the door to “reciprocal visits”.
The two countries are in conflict after Washington decided to apply 50% tariffs to Brazilian products, in retaliation for the legal case against former President Jair Bolsonaro, a political ally of Trump.
The Brazilian Foreign Minister added that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US trade representative Jamieson Greer witnessed the meeting, after having negotiated for hours with a delegation from Beijing, before Trump’s arrival in Kuala Lumpur and his meeting next week with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump, for whom Malaysia is the initial stop on his first trip to Asia in his second term, said at the beginning of the meeting with Lula that he was confident they would reach “very good agreements”, without giving further details.
Lula and Trump, whose relationship is also affected by the escalation of the fight against drug trafficking by Latin American cartels by the USA, met in Kuala Lumpur on the occasion of the 47th summit of ASEAN leaders and allies, which began today and will last until Tuesday.
The Brazilian President has been in Malaysia for several days, where he met on Saturday with the country’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, after a trip to Indonesia, in search of trade agreements to mitigate the impact of United States tariffs.
