Menopause is a natural stage of life that affects many women, but medical care in the United States, especially in Utah, leaves much to be desired. On October 18th, World Menopause Day, attention will be drawn to this issue. While in countries such as the UK and Australia around 15% of women use hormone replacement therapy (HRT), in the US the figure is less than 5%. This discrepancy is due in part to the inadequate preparation of American health care providers.
A 2019 Mayo Clinic survey found that only 6.8% of medical students in family medicine, internal medicine and gynecology felt adequately prepared to treat menopausal symptoms. Despite increased awareness of menopause, this number is still alarmingly low. In addition, Utah’s high birth rate puts a strain on gynecologists, leaving less time for menopause care.
Another problem is the limited availability of medications in the USA. There are no approved testosterone treatments for menopausal women, although testosterone in appropriate doses can increase energy, improve sexual function, and maintain muscle and bone health. In Australia, however, a cream specifically designed for postmenopausal women is available.
The U.S. reluctance to provide menopause care is due in part to a 2002 study by the Women’s Health Initiative that exaggerated the risks of HRT. This outdated data still influences medical practice, even though current research confirms the safety and effectiveness of HRT. There is an urgent need to improve medical education and address gaps in care to ensure women’s health and well-being.
