The introduction of Meta AI in WhatsApp has raised concerns among many users, especially regarding privacy. This artificial intelligence, which runs in the background of private and group chats, can theoretically access messages if activated directly. This is done by typing ‘@Meta AI’ in a chat. Although all other messages remain end-to-end encrypted, not every user feels comfortable with this option.
WhatsApp has responded to these concerns by introducing a feature called ‘Enhanced Chat Privacy’. This option, which must be activated manually in the settings of each chat, prevents the AI from being activated directly by the @ symbol. However, this feature does not provide complete protection as other forms of data sharing, such as taking screenshots or forwarding messages, are still possible.
The skepticism about the integration of Meta AI into WhatsApp is not unfounded. According to experts, once data is sent to the AI, it is difficult to retrieve it. The consumer advice center has already warned Meta because of the planned use of user data for AI training. There is also concern that the EU could also examine private WhatsApp chats in the future.
Meta emphasizes that the AI has no access to chats that are not explicitly sent to it. However, the question remains as to how secure user data really is. Meta’s continuous collection of information such as usernames and IP addresses raises further concerns. The discussion about data protection and AI use in messengers will therefore probably continue for a long time.
