This Tuesday, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumassured during “La Mañanera del pueblo” that his government keeps the dialogue tables open with agricultural producers who have staged protests in different regions of the country. demanding to set the minimum price of corn at 7,200 pesos.
“Yes, there is a proposal that was made to them, the working table is open and the dialogue table will continue,” stated the President in the National Palace.
The Mexican Governor stated that next Thursday the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), Julio Berdegué, will be at the presidential appearance to address the situation.
Sheinbaum’s statements came after a series of mobilizations of corn producers and farmers in the country, who blocked roads in several states to demand the Government set the minimum price of corn at 7,200 pesos.
Yesterday, Monday, Mexican authorities offered to set that price at 6,050 pesos.
However, the Farmers and producers rejected it and described it as a “mockery” and “insult to the Mexican countryside.”
He Government of Mexico has reiterated that it seeks a balanced agreement that benefits both small producers and price stability in the domestic market, in a context of tension in the countryside due to the fall in international corn prices and the effects of climate change on production.
The producers have warned that their protests and road blockades will continue until their demands are met, as they indicated that “patience is over” and the “false” dialogue tables, and they said that what was a “proposal” became a “non-negotiable national demand.”
Called by the Peasant Agricultural Movement (MAC) and the National Union of Agricultural Workers (UNTA), protesters paralyzed roads on Monday in Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacán, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Sonora, Baja California, Durango, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Colima, Chiapas and Puebla.
