‘Miami Vice’ Reboot May Have Nabbed 2 of Hollywood’s Hottest Young Stars

Two of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood might be taking their talents to Miami. Reports started circulating on Friday that Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler were in talks to star in the upcoming reboot of Miami Vice.

According to Deadline, Jordan and Butler are being eyed as the leads of the movie, which Universal Pictures has tentatively scheduled to come out on August 6, 2027, with production set to begin next year. Joseph Kosinski, director of F1 and Top Gun: Maverick, will helm the upcoming movie, which is a reboot of the ’80s TV series and Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx-led film adaptation from 2006. Michael Mann created the show and directed the movie.

Jordan and Butler are reportedly going to play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett, respectively. The pair are two detectives working undercover in Miami in an effort to thwart drug dealers and other sorts of nefarious crimes and vices in the South Florida city. The original series, which starred Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson, ran from 1984 to 1989. The movie, which has become something of an action film bro classic, was set in the era when it was released, the mid-’00s.

The upcoming movie will be a period piece set in the ’80s. An official synopsis says the movie “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler Are Big Rising Stars

Foxx and Farrell, stars of the movie, leave big shoes to fill, but Jordan and Butler have a good shot. Jordan, the 38-year-old star of films like Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and this year’s blockbuster horror hit Sinners, is one of the most exciting and talented actors of his generation. He’s starring in a remake of the steamy heist film The Thomas Crown Affair, also set to come out in 2027.

Butler, 34, was nominated for an Academy Award for playing the title character in the music biopic Elvis. His other notable roles include Dune: Part Two and The Bikeriders.
