They warn that the situation of public transport is critical because scrap bonuses are not enough to acquire new units

Mexico City.- The Broad Force of Transporters (FAT) confirmed that next Wednesday, October 29, it will carry out a massive mobilization and simultaneous blockades on the main avenues of Mexico City, given the lack of agreements with the capital government to carry out the increase in public transport fare concessioned.

According to the organization, the meetings held with authorities from the Ministry of Mobility (Semovi) and the Government have not led to concrete results, despite the fact that the head of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, He personally promised to meet their demands.

“We were listened to by Ms. Brugada, who gave her word to finalize the increase. However, her officials ignored the instruction and kept the dialogue stalled,” denounced the FAT.

The group, which groups more than 8 thousand units, warns that this time the blockades will not be limited to a single avenue – as happened on July 29 – but that they will “suffocate the capital” with marches and closures in the main accesses and roads.

“Given the disdain towards the sector’s proposals, we demand to be heard. We do not ask for privileges, but rather minimum conditions to survive,” said Aniceto Guzmán, one of its representatives.

The FAT argues that the economic situation of concessioned transportation is critical: the scrappage bonuses of 450 thousand pesos per unit barely cover 15% of the real cost of a new vehicle, estimated at more than 3 million pesos. In addition, demand fell 33% after the pandemic and the oversupply on routes reaches 50%.

The transporters ask to standardize the rate with that of the State of Mexico and create a mobility fund that subsidizes the user, not the operator. “The real cost of transporting a person is 15 pesos, but we charge 6 or 7. It is unsustainable,” said Felipe Núñez.

Although they apologized to citizens for the damage, they insisted that mobilizations are their last resort. “People know that we do not ask for luxuries, we ask for survival,” they concluded.
