SAN FRANCISCO / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The wallpaper app Panels developed by tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee will be discontinued at the end of the year. Despite a promising launch, the app failed to live up to expectations and is now being shut down.

The news that Marques Brownlee’s wallpaper app Panels, better known as MKBHD, is shutting down has surprised many. Brownlee, who is considered one of the most influential tech reviewers, had high expectations for the app. However, since its launch in September 2024, the app has struggled to build a stable user base.
Brownlee explained in an unlisted YouTube video that developing the app faced challenges from the start. He acknowledged that mistakes were made in the creation of the first app and that the composition of the development team had changed, making it difficult to implement his vision.
The idea behind Panels came from demand from his fans who regularly asked about the stunning background images he used in his videos. Panels offered exclusive, high-resolution wallpapers from artists available for $50 per year or $12 per month. But users’ willingness to pay for something that they could find for free on the Internet remained low.
Although Panels topped the photo app charts on iOS and Google Play when it launched in September 2024, the app failed to sustain that success. According to Appfigures, Panels reached approximately 900,000 downloads and generated $95,000 in consumer spending. In the last month before the announcement, the number of downloads fell to 3,000, which accelerated the decision to close.
Panels will officially retire on December 31, 2025, and users with active annual subscriptions will receive a refund. Following the closure, all user data will be deleted and the app’s source code will be made available as open source to allow other developers to build on it.
