Mnangagwa pledges R6.8 million to Warriors’ AFCON campaign

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has donated $400 000 (R6.8 million) of his personal funds into the Warriors’ Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Morocco.

The country’s sports minister Anselem Sanyatwe announced the news at the team’s send-off dinner on Monday evening.

The president allocated the money specifically to support and care for the national team throughout the tournament.

Sports minister praises presidential support for the Warriors

Addressing players, government officials, business leaders, and football stakeholders, Sanyatwe praised the President’s consistent backing of the Warriors.

“His Excellency has always ensured that our athletes are supported, and that our national teams, not only soccer, operate in an environment that encourages excellence,” Sanyatwe said.

He added that the $400 000 came directly from Mnangagwa’s office, not the national fiscus.

“Let me proudly inform you that the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe injected a total of $400 000 from his office, and not fiscus, for the welfare of our Warriors during AFCON. And on that note, basing from my background as a military general, failure is not an option,” he said.

Government Contribution Remains Unclear

Sanyatwe highlighted the President’s personal intervention. However, he did not reveal how much the government is contributing to the Warriors’ AFCON campaign through the national budget.
The omission has sparked curiosity among observers following the team’s preparations.

Warriors Eye Historic Knockout Stage

The Warriors depart for Morocco with renewed confidence and hopes of finally breaking their jinx at the continental showpiece.
Zimbabwe has never progressed beyond the AFCON group stages. However, the team believes this could be the year they make history.

Tough Group Awaits Warriors

The Warriors face a demanding group stage, where they will go up against African football giants Egypt, regional rivals South Africa, and Angola.
Despite the challenge, the squad remains optimistic about delivering a strong performance.
