More illegal schools popping up in KwaZulu-Natal

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Sipho Hlomuka, has warned parents, learners and communities to be on high alert as more illegal and unregistered schools continue to operate across the province.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, these so-called fly-by-night institutions often target vulnerable learners by making false promises. These include guaranteed results, fast-tracked qualifications and certificates that are not legally recognised.

Hlomuka said these institutions are not registered with the department and are not accredited to offer recognised education programmes. As a result, learners who enrol at such schools risk walking away with qualifications that carry no value.

Learners in KwaZulu-Natal urged to verify schools before enrolling

The MEC urged parents and learners to take responsibility for verifying the status of any school or training provider before enrolling.

He said this can be done by visiting the Department of Education’s district offices, particularly the examination sections, or by contacting departmental officials for guidance.

“The Department will not hesitate to act against individuals or institutions that prey on our communities by offering illegal and unrecognised education services,” Hlomuka said.

He also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious institutions or any illegal schools to the nearest education office.
