More than 50 museums from around the world show solidarity with Louvre director after robbery

Fifty-seven museums from around the world, including Prado, Tate e MoMA expressed support to the director of the Louvre Museum in Paris, Laurence des Carsafter the jewelry theft occurred on October 19th.

“The museums They are not bastions or safes. Although they create a safe environment for art and the public, their reason for being lies in openness and accessibility. Among the signatories are the Brazilian Adriano Pedrosa, director ofSão Paulo Museum of ArtMiguel Falomir, director of the Prado Museum, Pepe Serra, from National Art Museum of CataloniaMaria Balshaw, from Tate (London), Taco Dibbits, doRijksmuseum (Amsterdam), Claire Bernardi, from National Orangery Museum (Paris), Francesca Cappelletti, general director ofBorghese Gallery (Roma), Christophe Cherix, do Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Nicholas Cullinan, from British Museum (London) e Cécile Debray, president of National Picasso Museum-Paris.

Those responsible for the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico and the Pompidou Centerin Paris, also signed the letterin which they recall that “this theft is not just attacking the Louvre, but the museums themselves in their most fundamental mission: to share the common heritage of humanity with as many people as possible.”

“We will continue to fulfill this mission together, with enthusiasm and determination, alongside the Louvre Museum”, adds the letter.

A message was published the day after French authorities had two suspected men arrested of being part of the group of four people who, on the morning of October 19th, robbed the most visited museum in the world, stealing several pieces from the crown jewels collection, valued at around 88 million euros, although their heritage value is incalculable.
