A major decision is coming up in Morris County: Voters will vote in November on whether money from the Open Space, Farmland, Floodplain Protection and Historic Preservation Trust Funds can be used to maintain land that is already protected. This initiative could improve the ecological health and accessibility of the areas without requiring a tax increase.
The proposal, developed by a committee formed in January 2024, would see the funds used for measures such as habitat restoration, reducing invasive species and improving green infrastructure. These measures are intended to ensure the long-term preservation and use of the protected areas.
Stephen Shaw, deputy director of the Morris County Commission and chair of the review committee, emphasized that maintaining protected lands is a natural next step in the region’s conservation efforts. Morris County residents have supported land conservation for over 30 years, and this initiative builds on a long list of successful voter-approved projects.
The proposed initiative would initially be limited to municipal applicants and land, but could be expanded to include land managed by nonprofit organizations in the future. Funding would be based on a matching grant system, with communities covering part of the project costs. This structure is similar to previous expansions of the Trust Fund, such as the Trail Construction Grant Program introduced in 2014.
