This Sunday, October 26, the Russian government warned the US president that Russia always finds a way to adapt to Western economic restrictions, after Donald Trump approved the first anti-Russian sanctions of his second term.
Moscow “always finds a way” to adapt to sanctions that seek to “bring Russia to its knees”, Alexey Overchuk, Russian deputy prime minister, told the Russian press from Kuala Lumpur.
Overchuk, who heads the Russian delegation at the summit of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), warned that “with Russia you cannot speak in a language of threats, of sanctions”.
“For some reason, they always try to bring us to our knees, but they don’t learn that they have never achieved it and will never achieve it”, he assured.
Overchuk denounced that the North American tariffs affected ASEAN countries especially severely, and said that he plans to meet in the capital of Malaysia with the prime ministers of the host country, Vietnam and Cambodia.
After the cancellation of the Russian-American summit in Budapest, due to Moscow’s refusal to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine, Trump approved, last week, sanctions against the two main Russian oil companies, Lukoil and Rosneft, which represent half of Russian exports and more than 5% of the world total.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called them a “hostile act” but denied that they would have a significant impact on the economy, to which Trump responded: “We will see in six months.”
The press pointed out that China and India will suspend imports of Russian oil for fear of secondary sanctions and the Russian Central Bank has already reduced growth forecasts for the last quarter of the year.
