Jim Watkins, a Vietnam veteran who suffers from dementia, experienced a special moment of joy when a motorcycle parade in his honor took place outside his home in Kearney, Missouri. The illness has taken a lot from him in recent years, but his love for motorcycles remains unbroken. On October 5th, a warm and sunny Sunday, the hum of Harley-Davidsons filled the air and brought a smile to his face.
Watkins, who was once the proud owner of a Harley, could hardly contain his excitement as the motorcycles drove past his neighborhood. His son Jason noticed his father light up when he heard the machines. This parade was more than just a tribute; it was a moment of reconnection with his past and his passion.
The parade was organized by the community, including Oak Pointe and Luminary Hospice, who joined about 70 friends, volunteers and family members in paying tribute to Watkins. The Warriors Watch Riders, a group of veteran motorcyclists, played a central role in the event. Doug Stacer of the Warriors Watch Riders emphasized the importance of honoring a veteran while they are still alive.
For Watkins’ wife Janet, who has been by his side for over 60 years, the day was a welcome break from the challenges of everyday life. She hopes such moments of joy and pride will help her husband find himself again, even as the memories fade. The event showed how strangers can come together to help a veteran in need and give them a special day.
