A mother accused of letting alligators kill her young son allegedly also got her newborn baby high on cocaine.

Hilda Vasquez, 34, was arrested after her 12-year-old autistic son, Bryan, was discovered dead in a lagoon in New Orleans East last month.

Bryan climbed out of the bedroom window of his home on August 14 wearing an adult diaper and vanished, according to his mum.

A search ensued, and a United Cajun Navy volunteer found Bryan’s body in a canal just a few blocks from his home on August 26.

The New Orleans Police Department has arrested Hilda Vasquez, the mother of 12-year-old Bryan Vasquez, in connection with his death. Detectives confirmed that Ms.Vasquez was taken into custody around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday and charged with second-degree Cruelty to Juveniles and Negligent Homicide. ?There has been a pattern of both negligence and abuse over Bryan?s 12 years, and so we believe we can prove that pattern of negligence and abuse lead to a severe injury, undue pain and suffering on his part," said NOPD Deputy Supt. Nicholas Gernon during a press conference Sunday. Police said Bryan was previously removed from the home as an infant after sustaining injuries, including a skull fracture, broken legs, and a collapsed lung, but was later returned by the Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS). "When he was three months old, she committed a skull fracture, broken legs, and a collapsed lung," said Gernon. "At that point he was removed from the home, and at some point subsequent to that, DCFS returned him back to the home." The Orleans Parish Coroner?s Office determined that Bryan died from drowning with blunt trauma consistent with an alligator attack.

His cause of death was blunt trauma and drowning from an alligator attack, according to the New Orleans coroner.

The volunteer, Jon Gusanders, said that two gators stored Bryan’s body underwater and surfaced with it. Gusanders said he used a drone for about an hour to distract the animals from continuing to push and hide the body. He suspected that neighbors were feeding scraps to the reptiles.

Vasquez was arrested on September 7 and charged with negligent homicide and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

The mother appeared in court on Monday and a judge ordered her to be held at Plaquemines Parish Jail without bond. Vasquez was denied a $5,000 bond.

During the hearing, state prosecutors said that Vasquez’s youngest child tested positive for cocaine a month before Bryan went missing. Vasquez also had cocaine in her system, they said.

Vasquez was charged with cruelty to juveniles in 2014 after Bryan, who was an infant at the time, suffered a fractured skull and broken legs.

Prosecutors deemed Vasquez a danger to her three surviving children, and she has been ordered to stay away from them.

The alligators that attacked Bryan have been eradicated by the Louisiana Department of Wildfire and Fisheries.

‘Bryan’s life and death will bring many changes to the entire state of Louisiana and the world,’ states a GoFundMe page for his funeral expenses and his family’s needs.

None of the funds will be used for legal aid for Vasquez, according to the page.

The fundraiser had received more than $15,000 in donations as of Wednesday afternoon.
