Murals illuminate the Kanasín Cemetery

KANASÍN.- The facade of the Kanasin General Cemetery became a canvas for Yucatecan urban artists, who expressed their creativity to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

With murals and graffiti, the group The Old School Yucatan Through this work, the richness of tradition and local culture is highlighted, turning the space into a visual tribute to the memory and color of this festivity.

With the intention of promoting culture and inclusion through urban art, La Vieja Escuela Yucatán has established itself as a reference for graffiti in the state.

Founded in 2021, but with roots dating back to Mayan Council groupthis collective currently brings together more than 50 members, including experienced artists and young promises of muralism.

Their most recent work is reflected in the creation of the mural located on the outskirts of the cemetery, on 19th Street between 28th, a work that emerged as an initiative of the artists themselves to beautify a space that has deteriorated over time.

Graffiti has saved many lives. Many young people who could have continued in gangs and other negative activities decided to turn their lives around and focus on graffiti art. Today they are great muralists, painters and graffiti artists. Thanks to this art they managed to get away from many negative paths”.

Participants used vinyl and aerosols, combining traditional and contemporary techniques to bring each work to life.

Hanal Pixán commemorated with ‘Pixan Graff’ contest

Likewise, there will be carried out “Pixan Graff” contestwhich will bring together 35 artists, including a child of just 6 years old.

On October 27, starting at 7 pm, the lighting and awarding of the contest will take place.

Finally, Magaña Castillo pointed out that, in addition to the contest, the group is already preparing new proposals for the end of 2025 and 2026, with the intention of expanding its activities to other municipalities and keeping the movement alive. graffiti in Yucatan.
