Presidential candidate João Cotrim Figueiredo stated this Thursday that Pedro Passos Coelho’s support for his candidacy would be natural and considered that this scenario is “clearly” possible because he is “the one who is closest” to his political orientation.
Speaking to journalists after attending, in Lisbon, the presentation session of the book “Introduction to Liberalism”, by Miguel Morgado, which was attended and given an intervention by Pedro Passos Coelho, João Cotrim Figueiredo was asked if it seems like a possible scenario for the former prime minister to declare support for his candidacy.
“I clearly think so. I think that, from the point of view of his political orientation, I am the candidate who is closest to what Pedro Passos Coelho may want to do in Portugal”, he stated.
The presidential candidate, supported by IL, considered that Having a President of the Republic with his attitude and a Prime Minister with Pedro Passos Coelho’s attitude “would be a unique opportunity that the country has not had in the last 30, 35 years to, in fact, carry out the reforms that are needed”.
Asked if he had already spoken to Pedro Passos Coelho about this matter, Cotrim Figueiredo replied: “I think that this support is not asked for, this support ends up being natural, especially with someone with the political capital of Pedro Passos Coelho”. “So let’s see what the next few months have in store for us,” he said.
After, in July, saying that he had spoken to a lot of people before deciding to move forward with a presidential candidacy, Cotrim Figueiredo was asked whether Pedro Passos Coelho was one of those people. “I talk to a lot of people, including some who were in this room today,” he said.
Regarding whether he would like to have the support of Pedro Passos Coelho, the former IL leader said that I would like to have the support “of all those who have these liberal ribs and who have, in relation to Portugal, a concern for the future, and who want to express themselves in political discourse today”. “All of these are welcome, regardless of party,” he said.
In September, at a National Local Meeting organized by the Liberal Initiative, João Cotrim Figueiredo stated that his candidacy goes “far beyond” his party of origin and is “much broader”. “I already have an important group of support from leaders, former leaders and even founders of the PSD, PS, Chega, CDS, and which I will announce soon, after the local authorities”he declared at the time, without wanting to reveal names.
