Three of the most populated municipalities in the State of Mexico are once again among the most unsafe in the country, according to the National Survey of Urban Public Safety (ENSU)prepared by the INEGI, it is noted that Naucalpan, Chimalhuacán and Cuautitlán Izcalli They make up the group of the ten cities with the highest perception of insecurity, with percentages greater than 81% of their population fearing being the victim of a crime.

The results, corresponding to the third quarter of 2024, detail that Naucalpan reports 82.1% of inhabitants who feel unsafe; Chimalhuacan81.9%, y Cuautitlán Izcalli81.7%. With these levels, the Mexican municipalities are located in places 8, 9 and 10 in the national ranking, only below cities such as Culiacán, Chilpancingo and Irapuato.

Today that challenge of crime in the efforts of Isaac Montoya in NaucalpanXóchitl Flores Jiménez in Chimalhuacanand Daniel Serrano from Cuautitlán Izcalli.

Although Naucalpan shows a slight decrease compared to the previous quarter, the general trend shows that fear continues to be part of everyday life. The survey indicates that at the national level, 63% of Mexicans over 18 years of age consider it unsafe to live in their city, and that women are the most affected, with 68.2% of negative perceptions.

In contrast to the figures, citizens assure that local authorities only act under social pressure and that the measures implemented are merely for the media.

“There is no strategy or prevention here. They only react when people protest or when a red note is issued. They arrive late and set up operations that last a few days, just enough for the cameras,” denounces Don Carlos Hernández, a merchant in the center of Naucalpan.

From ChimalhuacanAna López, a resident of the Fundidores neighborhood, shares her anger: “We live in fear. There are no constant patrols or real surveillance. When something happens, police and officials appear to hand out flyers, but that does not give us security. Everything is to silence criticism, not to protect us.”

In Cuautitlán Izcallithe annoyance is also widespread. Neighbors of Infonavit Norte and La Quebrada claim that home robberies and assaults on public transportation increased, but the authorities “only presume statistics and not results.”

The ENSU confirms this distrust: both municipalities are among the worst evaluated in citizen trust towards the police and local governments. Despite official speeches, the reality on the streets remains the same: insufficient patrols, useless cameras and entire neighborhoods plunged into fear.
