Neighbors weigh in after Augusta leaders vote to take action against Bon Air owners

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Augusta commissioners are preparing to take action against the company in charge of running two low-income apartment complexes.

Last week, commissioners heard from Redwood Housing, which is in charge of running the apartments at Richmond Summit and here at the Bon Air.

Augusta leaders are not happy with the situation, and those living at Bon Air are saying the same.

For some long-time residents, they describe the living experience ‘chaos’, after years of dealing with poor living conditions and a slew of recent shootings.

“My apartment is as hot as Hades. I don’t have any air,” said Michael Henderson.

“I do not feel safe out here when people are shooting like that—you don’t know where the bullet might go to, even your own apartment,” said Alice Carter-Jenkins.

It’s also not the first time city leaders are taking action following complaints.

Last summer, commissioners approved a combined $48 million for renovations at Bon Air and Richmond Summit.

Redwood Housing was put in charge to improve the apartment complex, but some say that’s not the case.

“Since Redwood bought this, it went downhill—I’ll say it just like that. We’ve been having all kinds of problems. But, I hope that the right people will come forward and help us who have been in here for years,” said Brenda Hamer.

After a conversation last week, city leaders approved to start the process to place Redwood’s business license on probation.

They’ll be meeting again before making a final decision.

“We have to hear back from them and what they want to bring forth, but if we don’t like what we hear then we’ll move forward with probation,” said District 3 commissioner Catherine Smith-Rice.

Henderson says the real action he wants taken is for ownership to step in the shoes of residents like him.

“If they were to deal with what we have to deal with, they’d see things through a totally different set of eyes,” Henderson said.

While commissioners will not meet this week, they say they will be discussing this more over the next few weeks.

A hearing is set for Tuesday, July 29th.
