Neighbours spoilers follow for the 2025 series finale, which is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
Just three years on since we last said goodbye to Ramsay Street and the credits have rolled on Neighbours again, bringing to a close the story of Erinsborough’s finest once more.
The popular Aussie soap, which was a staple of daytime TV in the UK for 40 years, made famous some of the world’s biggest stars including Margot Robbie and Kylie Minogue.
It’s given us countless iconic moments over the decades, from Scott and Charlene’s (Minogue and Jason Donovan) wedding, to Harold Bishop’s (Ian Smith) disappearance at sea – and subsequent return with amnesia.
The show was thought to have ended forever in 2022 after Channel 5 axed it from their schedules and an acclaimed finale followed, with names including Kylie, Jason, Margot and Guy Pearce (who played Mike Young) reprising the roles that made them stars for one final Ramsay Street hurrah.
But a twist that not even the soap itself could’ve predicted subsequently came, with Neighbours being revived by Amazon Freevee.
Two years and 460 episodes – including the 40th anniversary celebrations – allowed for a heap of new storylines, characters and soapy moments.
David Tanaka’s (Takya Honda) tragic death – and Aaron Brennan’s (Matt Wilson) subsequent battle with grief – the introduction of now fan-favourite Krista Sinclair (Majella Davis) and the superb Varga-Murphy family are just a few key moments of the Amazon saga that have made the revival worthwhile.
But with Freevee having shut down, it’s time to say goodbye once again, with Neighbours’ new chapter having officially come to an end.
How did Neighbours end in 2025?
The show’s finale was very different this time around as art imitated real-life, with Ramsay Street’s future at stake after Erinsborough City council gave the greenlight to a build a freeway that would run straight through the suburb.
Longtime Neighbours stalwarts Karl and Susan Kennedy (Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne) fronted a campaign to fight the freeway, rallying together some of Erinsbrough’s finest to help the cause.
Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) and Shane Ramsay (Peter O’Brien), however, had alternative plans, as they proposed building new settlements – Robinson Towers and Ramsay Hills – where their fellow neighbours could live.
The show’s finale saw the various familiar faces – including a number of returning favourites – for Paul and Shane’s separate tours of the potential new living sites.
Susan, however, refused to attend either, struggling with the prospect of losing her beloved Ramsay Street, opting instead to stay put and fight for the place she’s called home for three decades.
‘‘I think the audience will be divided,’ Susan Kennedy legend Jackie Woodburne told Metro of the finale. ‘Some will want [Ramsay Hills] and some will want [Robinson Towers], but they’ll all have some semblance of hope that there’ll be some version of Neighbours in the future. Even if it’s not on screen, the characters they’ve enjoyed will continue on in their lives in some iteration down the track.’
While the first finale of Neighbours wrapped everything up in a bow, the new farewell episode has instead left things a little more open-ended, just in case there is a chance that the soap be revived again.
‘‘You couldn’t do that twice,’ said Jackie of the 2022 finale, adding that she thinks what Executive Producer Jason Herbison came up with this time ‘is as perfect for the extra couple of years of Neighbours that we got.’
As for the future, is this really the end? For the time being, it certainly seems that way but if there’s one show capable of staging a comeback it’s Neighbours, which has evaded the axe on at least three separate occasions.
With that in mind, perhaps we will see Ramsay Street’s finest at some stage again, but for now viewers will just have to speculate about what happens next for their favourite characters.
Why is Neighbours ending?
Discussing why Neighbours was axed, boss Jason Herbison told TV Tonight in March: ‘We were considered a very big success on Amazon Freevee, and we’re so grateful to them for this chapter and this two and a half years.
‘The team at Amazon Freevee did an incredible job of launching us over there. I think we were on bus stops all across the UK, it was amazing and they have been wonderful to work with. But yes, as you’ve as you’ve mentioned the closure of Freevee, did change the landscape.’
Jason said that Neighbours, which often ranked in the Number 1 position on UK Amazon Prime’s top programmes, was ‘simply not part of their content strategy’
‘And there’s really no hard feelings with that,’ he said. ‘Things change and as I say, we’re just very grateful to them to have had this chapter.’
Neighbours’ finale is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
