Netflix Announces Release Date for Documentary About NFL Legend

Denver Broncos fans and NFL aficionados are getting an early Christmas present from Netflix this year.

On Wednesday, the streaming giant announced that its new documentaryElway, documenting the life and career of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, will premiere on Monday, Dec. 22.

Along with the announcement, Netflix also dropped an official trailer.

More on ‘Elway’

Netflix originally revealed it was producing a documentary on Elway in December 2024. The film debuted at the Denver Film Festival early last month.

“Elway highlights one of the most celebrated athletes of the past 40 years, pro football legend John Elway,” says the Netflix tagline for the project. “The documentary feature will follow his life on and off the field including being drafted to play baseball by the New York Yankees, starring in one of the greatest games in college football history, and winning two Super Bowls as a player and a third as an executive with the Denver Broncos. John Elway’s narrative is undeniably historic—yet altogether human.”

Skydance Sports, a Paramount Sports Entertainment, is producing Elway. Skydance was also responsible for recent Netflix sports documentaries like Aaron Rodgers: Enigma, WWE Unreal and America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.

Former teammate gives his endorsement

Karl Mecklenberg, who was a teammate of Elway’s as a linebacker for several outstanding Broncos teams in the 1980s and early 1990s, reviewed Elway last month and shared his thoughts with Broncos Wire.

“I recommend the movie for those of you who are interested in learning what made arguably the best quarterback ever tick,” Mecklenberg said. “I was John’s teammate for 12 years. That’s longer than anyone else except for Dennis Smith who also was a 12-year teammate. I learned some things I didn’t know about him and was moved by the emotion and truth that came out in the movie. His single-minded focus on winning the Super Bowl is what stood out to me and really separated John from most players including me.”
