Netflix Set to Lose the No. 1 Sequel in Rotten Tomatoes History This Month

It isn’t The Godfather, Part II, The Empire Strikes Back or The Dark Knight. The movie that holds the title of the No. 1 sequel in Rotten Tomatoes history is a heartwarming family film featuring an extremely polite bear, and it is officially set to leave Netflix this month. After winning over viewers’ hearts in the 2015 film Paddington, it was hard to envision how a sequel could top the original, yet in 2018, Paddington 2 managed to do just that. The critically acclaimed follow-up movie held a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes for roughly three years, but it’ll depart the streaming giant on Dec. 31.

Paddington 2 was a force on the popular review site, holding a perfect critics’ score from its release in 2018 to 2021, when a freelance film critic gave the movie a negative review and posted it on Rotten Tomatoes, as The New York Times previously detailed. The longtime perfect score fell just one point to 99 percent, where it still stands.

Regardless of the one strangely timed review that ended an incredible run of perfection, Paddington 2 has still earned its flowers. This wasn’t the only accomplishment for the movie, as Paddington 2 became only the third movie in history at the time to hold a 100 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 150 or more reviews.

Even with that one negative review, the beloved bear with the blue trench coat and red hat found his place on the throne when Rotten Tomatoes ranked the 100 best sequels of all time. Paddington 2 held off multiple Toy Story sequels, a Mission: Impossible and The Godfather, Part II, among others.

Here’s a look at the top-10 best sequels on the list:

  1. Paddington 2
  2. Toy Story 2
  3. Three Colors: Red
  4. 007: Goldfinger
  5. Toy Story 3
  6. Before Midnight
  7. The Godfather, Part II
  8. Bride of Frankenstein
  9. Toy Story 4
  10. Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Why ‘Paddington 2’ Is Leaving Netflix: The Last Day to Stream the ‘Perfect’ Sequel

As the calendar changes and a new year gets underway, it’s common for streaming platforms to undergo a wave of licensed content departures, with new arrivals being added. This appears to be the case with Paddington 2’s exit from Netflix, which What’s on Netflix highlighted. This means that the final day to watch the beloved sequel is Dec. 31, 2025.

Paddington 2 joins a lengthy list of departures on Netflix to begin 2026, so don’t be surprised if there are several movies you frequently come across that aren’t listed on Jan. 1, 2026. Although it’s unknown where the popular bear could land for its next streaming home as part of a subscription, Paddington 2 is still available to rent or buy on several platforms.

Currently, JustWatch lists Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Fandango at Home as the available options to either purchase or rent Paddington 2. However, given the 2018 film’s widespread popularity, don’t be surprised if it finds a new home sooner rather than later.
