The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) was once again at the center of public conversation after rumors resurfaced about the possible circulation of a new two thousand peso bill. However, the central bank itself clarified that For now, its issuance is not planned, although there is a conceptual design developed for several years within the G family of banknotes project.
The G family, officially presented in 2018 with the Benito Juárez 500 peso bill, was created to replace the F family and reinforce the security, durability and representativeness of Mexican banknotes. It is made up of six denominations currently in circulation: 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos, each one dedicated to a historical process of the country and a national ecosystem.

During its development, Banxico considered a subproject for a possible denomination of two thousand pesos, approved by the Government Board in 2013, although conditioned on a single circumstance: its issuance would depend on the cash needs in the national economy. That is, it would only be printed if the volume of transactions or inflation justified it.
According to the original plan, The two thousand peso bill would be dedicated to contemporary Mexico, with the figures of Octavio Paz and Rosario Castellanos on the obverse, while on the reverse the dry forest ecosystem would be represented, with the magueyero bat, the agave and the agave landscape of Tequila, Jalisco. Its size would be slightly larger than the current thousand peso bill, with an additional six millimeters in length.

However, Banxico reiterated that there is currently no date or official plan to issue it. In a statement, the institution emphasized: “Only if necessary to satisfy the needs of users, will the putting into circulation of a 2,000 peso bill be considered.”
For now, the two thousand peso bill is not part of the immediate plans of the Bank of Mexico. Its issuance, according to the organization itself, will depend on the behavior of the national economy and the demand for cash, so the rumor remains just that: a rumor. Meanwhile, the current six banknotes in the G family remain the only ones in legal tender.
