Microsoft has introduced a new feature in Windows 11 that allows users to stream audio to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. This feature is based on the Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) audio codec and is currently being tested in preview for Windows 11 Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels. This development could significantly improve the shared listening experience by allowing users to share movies or music with friends without relying on external speakers.

The shared audio feature is particularly useful if you want to watch a movie on a laptop with a friend or family member. By connecting Bluetooth LE compatible devices to a Windows 11 PC and selecting the Shared Audio (Preview) option in the quick menu, users can take advantage of this feature. Microsoft introduced an LE Audio feature in Windows 11 back in August, which enables higher audio quality when using a wireless headset in games or calls.

Other companies have also added support for split audio. Google uses the Bluetooth LE-based Auracast feature to send audio from Android 16 devices to compatible hearing aids. This capability was later expanded to allow Pixel 8 phones or newer models to connect to two pairs of headphones at the same time. Samsung has also started integrating Auracast into its phones, starting with the Galaxy S24.

Currently, the split audio feature in Windows 11 is only available on select Copilot Plus PCs, including the 13.8- and 15-inch Surface laptops and the 13-inch Surface Pro. In the future, the function will also be available on the Samsung Galaxy Book5 360, Galaxy Book5 Pro and other devices. Using the feature requires devices compatible with Bluetooth LE, such as the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, Buds 3, Buds 3 Pro and the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones.
