Universal Music Group (UMG) recently reached a significant agreement with AI music startup Udio. This agreement ends a lawsuit in which Udio was accused of using copyrighted music without permission to train its AI models. Udio, known for its AI that can compose music from preset lyrics, will now develop a new platform based exclusively on authorized and licensed music.
The new platform, set to launch next year, will allow users to personalize, stream and share music. UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge emphasized that these agreements demonstrate the company’s commitment to embracing new technologies while protecting the rights of artists and songwriters. The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
The music industry is facing new challenges due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Companies like Udio have developed AI models based on information available on the internet, which has led to legal battles with major music labels. UMG, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group had sued Udio for allegedly using hits like The Temptations’ ‘My Girl’ to create similar tunes.
Andrew Sanchez, CEO and co-founder of Udio, expressed excitement about working with UMG. He sees this as an opportunity to redefine the way AI supports artists and fans. This partnership marks Udio’s first licensing agreement with a major music label and could pave the way for further collaborations in the industry.
Udio was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind employees and has celebrity backers such as musician will.i.am and Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger. The Udio app has already been downloaded 128,000 times in the Apple App Store. In parallel, UMG announced a partnership with Stability AI to develop AI-powered music tools for artists and producers.
