Everybody in America just wants themselves and their loved ones to be safe, no matter where they may be living.
Of course, some places in the United States are “safer” than others. That safety can be defined in multiple ways, as WalletHub’s latest study indicates.
The personal finance company has ranked the “safest” and “least safe” cities in America, analyzing over 180 cities across 41 key metrics. The metrics include traffic fatalities and assaults per capita, unemployment rate and how much of a city’s population is uninsured.
As WalletHub notes, safety goes beyond being physically safe from crime and violent acts and also includes financial security.
“When people think about safety in a city, their minds probably immediately go to things like the crime rate, auto fatality rate or risk of natural disasters,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety.”
Financial safety, Lupo says, includes “minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured, and combating homelessness.”

Warwick, Rhode Island: America’s ‘safest’ city
Warwick, the third-largest city in Rhode Island with a population just under 83,000, tops WalletHub’s “safest” city rankings.
Located 12 miles south of downtown Providence and roughly 63 miles southwest of Boston, Warwick had the third-lowest number of aggravated assaults per capita and tied for the fifth-lowest percentage of uninsured residents.
Warwick also had the fourth-lowest percentage of residents who are living in poverty, along with the seventh-lowest number of thefts per capita and 32nd-lowest total of murders.
Warwick doesn’t just measure up economically and personal security wise, either.
“When it comes to natural disasters, Warwick ranks as the city with the seventh-lowest risk of hail, 10th-lowest risk of wildfires, 23rd-lowest risk of tornadoes and 29th-lowest risk of earthquakes,” WalletHub said.
