The first trailer for Supergirl, the second film after Superman in the newly rebooted DC Universe movie series, arrives on Thursday, December 11, but a teaser for the upcoming promo already reveals a lot. Supergirl, which is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, sure seems like it has a lot of Guardians of the Galaxy energy—which perhaps is not a surprise, as GotG director James Gunn is also the head honcho of the DC Universe.
The short teaser shows Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin who made a cameo appearance at the end of 2025’s Superman movie when she returned to the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve her dog, Krypto, from Superman (David Corenswet). Set to the tune of Blondie’s 1980s song “Call Me,” the teaser shows a suited-up Supergirl wearing headphones that look distinctly like the ones Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) wore in Guardians of the Galaxy over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There are flashes of other scenes, including what looks like an alien funeral procession, Supergirl taking flight, and a bunch of sci-fi guns with laser pointers aimed at her and a companion.
In addition to Alcock as the titular hero, Supergirl stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Jason Momoa as Lobo. Supergirl’s parents, who will presumably appear in flashbacks as they died when Krypton exploded along with the rest of the Kruptonians other than Superman and Supergirl, will be played by David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham.
Supergirl Is a Sci-Fi Adventure Largely Based on One Recent Comic Book Series
While Superman was largely set on Earth and focused on the Man of Steel’s humanity, Supergirl will be more of a sci-fi adventure that’s largely set in outer space. While Clark Kent was sent to Earth as an infant, Kara was already a young adult when she was evacuated from the dying planet, but a complication with the rocket meant that she was delayed and her baby cousin was much older by the time she came to Earth. Because of this, Kara actually has memories of Krypton in a way that Clark doesn’t.
Largely inspired by Tom King’s 2022 acclaimed comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the upcoming film will see a jaded Kara celebrating her 21st birthday by going to planets with red suns because that way she’ll be able to get drunk. However, when she encounters a tragedy during this cosmic bender, she sets out on a quest for revenge.
An unlikely, damaged hero who was taken from their home as a child and is perhaps more interested in getting into some trouble than being a do-gooder? That could describe Guardians of the Galaxy or Supergirl.
