The European Southern Observatory has commissioned the 4-meter Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), an innovative instrument that is intended to revolutionize the spectroscopic survey of the sky in the southern hemisphere. The telescope, located at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, captured the light of the night sky for the first time on October 18, 2025. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era in astronomical research, as 4MOST is able to simultaneously decompose light from 2,400 celestial objects into 18,000 color components.
Spectroscopic analysis, which involves breaking down light into its spectral colors, provides valuable information about the physical properties of celestial bodies, such as their temperature, chemical composition and motion. These data are crucial for understanding the formation and evolution processes of stars, planets and galaxies. Particularly interesting is the possibility of gaining new insights into the distribution of dark matter in the universe, an area that has so far been largely unexplored.
The University of Hamburg is significantly involved in this project with its Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe”. Professor Jochen Liske, senior scientist at the Cluster of Excellence, emphasizes the importance of 4MOST for dark matter research. The statistical distribution of this matter could allow conclusions to be drawn about its physical properties, which would be a significant advance in astrophysics. The University of Hamburg contributed two million euros to the development of the instrument, with a large portion going towards the development of one of the three spectrographs.
4MOST was developed and built by an international consortium of 30 universities and research institutes in Europe and Australia. The management is the responsibility of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), which also takes over the scientific operation of the instrument. The combination of a large field of view, the number of objects observed simultaneously and the large number of spectral colors recorded makes 4MOST unique worldwide. Over the next five years, the telescope will create a comprehensive catalog of physical parameters of about 30 million objects spread across the southern sky.
