New ‘Top Gun’ Movie Will Make ‘Maverick’ Feel ‘Small in Comparison,’ Says Director

For longtime fans of the beloved Tom Cruise film Top Gun, it sounds as though there may be some good news coming in the near future. While a third movie, and a follow-up to the 2022 release Top Gun: Maverick, has been expected, director Joseph Kosinski offered a significant update on where things stand.

To put it bluntly, Kosinski essentially highlighted that for those who enjoyed Top Gun: Maverick, the third movie is primed to take things to another level. Considering the immense success Top Gun: Maverick had at both the box office and in terms of reviews from critics and fans, that’s an exciting outlook for the third addition to the series.

After Top Gun: Maverick pulled in more than $1.49 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, it was hard to envision a third movie not being in serious consideration. Kosinski had been open about the likelihood of it previously, but when speaking with Collider recently, he poured some fuel on that fire.

“So, I’ve said a few things about it. We’re working on it, Aaron Krueger’s writing the script as we speak,” Kosinski said. “The idea of it is very exciting. The scale of it is massive. It’s going to make Maverick feel small in comparison, honestly. But, yeah, that’s all I want to say, it’s very exciting.”

It’s safe to say that Kosinski took a fire that was already fairly big and doused it with fuel by making that comment in comparison to the last Top Gun film.

Although very little is known about the next addition to the Top Gun series, there has been buzz that Miles Teller and Glen Powell are expected to return alongside Cruise. Cruise, of course, reprised his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 2022 film, while Teller played Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw and Powell played Jake “Hangman” Seresin. The late Val Kilmer also returned to reprise the role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in a small but significant moment in the film.
