A new space for art and creativity is currently being created in downtown Alexandria. The Alexandria Art Guild, a nonprofit organization, has leased the former Faction Board Shop space on Broadway Street to establish the new visual arts center. This center will not only serve as a gallery, but also as a place for workshops and exchange among artists.
Stephen Henning, who was elected president of the Art Guild’s board of directors in September, emphasizes that the center will provide more than just an exhibition opportunity. It aims to be a place where artists can develop their skills and establish themselves as independent entrepreneurs. The planned opening is scheduled for November 20th, with a first public exhibition, the Holiday Art Sale.
The premises are in the basement, but there are wide stairs and work is underway to install an elevator to ensure accessibility. The Art Guild is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary permits and fundraising to have the elevator operational by next summer.
Henning explains that the idea for the center came from Melissa Werpy, a founding member of the Art Guild. She recognized the potential of the space, even though it was initially ruled out due to its basement location. However, Bonnie Tressler, another member with experience in the arts, convinced the group of the possibilities the space offers.
The center will showcase a variety of art media including ceramics, glass, jewelry, sculpture and textiles. Henning and Northington, another board member, are excited about the diversity and talent of local artists. The goal is not only to sell artwork, but also to offer workshops that help artists advance their careers.
The Alexandria Art Guild plans to establish the center as an integral part of the community and collaborate with other local organizations. Henning sees the center as a place where art comes to life in the heart of the city and enriches the community.
