Nintendo Switch 2 sales are beating the original Switch by a huge margin

The Nintendo Switch 2 is outperforming the original console by a significant amount, as Donkey Kong Bananza debuts on the US sales charts.

Nintendo has already confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console ever, with six million units sold worldwide, but new figures have highlighted the exact level of its impact in the US.

As reported by Circana’s Mat Piscatella on Bluesky, the Switch 2 has surpassed two million units sold in the US since it launched on June 5, 2025. For context, the console shifted 1.6 million units in its launch month, so that means another 400,000 in July – the deadest month of the year for any video game sales, let alone hardware.

According to Piscatella, the Switch 2 is 75% ahead of the ‘unit sales pace’ set by the original Switch. For comparison, the original Switch sold 2.74 million units worldwide within one month of its launch (via CNBC), so the Switch 2 has nearly shifted that same amount in one region alone.

It’s even more impressive considering the Switch 2 debuted in June, an unusual window for a console launch, given it’s a slow time of year for game sales in general, and most hardware is bought in the run-up to Christmas.

The huge volume of Switch 2 sales helped drive hardware spending growth across July in the US by 21% year-on-year, to $384 million (£285,450). This is the highest hardware spending in the month of July since 2008, when it hit $441 million (£327,823).

However, if you take the Switch 2 out of the equation, the picture is a lot bleaker. Dollar sales of PlayStation 5 hardware fell by 47% compared to a year ago, Xbox Series X/S dropped by 69%, while spending on the original Switch console declined by 52%.

In terms of games, EA Sports College Football 26 was the best-selling title of July in the US. This was followed by the EA Sports MVP Bundle (which combines Madden NFL 26 and EA Sports College Football 26), while Donkey Kong Bananza debuted in third. However, the latter does not include digital sales.

Despite only launching on July 10, EA Sports College Football 26 is already the third highest-selling game of the year in the US. Monster Hunter Wilds still holds the top spot, just ahead of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered.

As we approach the festive season, Switch 2 sales will likely balloon even further, with titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Kirby Air Riders, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond all still set to launch this year.
