Why this series opens the doors to healthier relationships.
Kristen Bell has fascinated me lately. Her role as Eleanor Shellstrop in The Good Place It drives me crazy. And now I’m riveted to her role as Joanne, the atheist podcast host who falls in love with a Jewish rabbi, Noah Roklov (Adam Brody).
Because the series, whose anticipated second season premiered yesterday on Netflix, is a romantic comedy that, despite falling into corniness at certain moments, feels real. And Joanne is great at communicating, something Noah has had trouble with in the past.
While the first season explored the relationship in its beginnings, with the undeniable chemistry between Bell and Brody, this second season explores the problems that can be experienced in a monogamous relationship in such a natural and real way. Very clever of the creators.
It would be easy to fall into the idealization of love and fall into classic problems of putting a third party at odds, as Mexican soap operas would do, but the series focuses on how complicated and human we can be, and how difficult it is to open up emotionally with another person.
Outside of the central couple, the other characters within both parts become extremely relevant, particularly Morgan (Justine Lupe), Joanne’s sister and best friend, Sasha (Timothy Simons), Noah’s brother and his wife, Esther (Jackie Tohn). This is important not only to add a more realistic context to the story, but also to address other topics such as jealousy, marriages, and generally different couple dynamics.
Although I’m only 4 episodes into this second season, I’m happy to confirm that its emotional and comic touches continue to feel organic and natural. And what a joy to have programs that advocate showing how liberating expressing yourself can be, especially in a time where evasion is our preferred tool when something makes us uncomfortable.
This is the positive side of Netflix. Nobody Wants This It is a good direction for the company. I hope he continues making stories with this detail and quality.
