NOS profit falls to €182 million, Miguel Almeida says telecommunications market “will remain challenging”

NOS saw revenues rise 2% to 1,336.9 million euros in the first nine months of the year compared to the same period last year. In a comment on the accounts, the executive president (CEO) of NOS considered that the telecommunications market in Portugal will remain “challenging” in the near future, arguing, however, that the operator had “another quarter of very solid operational and financial results”.

NOS’ profit fell 9.2% in the first nine months of the year, compared to the same period in 2024, to 182 million euros, due to the lack of extraordinary results last year, the company announced today.

Excluding extraordinary effects, NOS’ profit grew 21.3% to 177.7 million euros.

“The growth in the number of customers in these first nine months of the year, in a difficult market context, proves the superiority of NOS’ value proposition and its recognition by Portuguese consumers”, states Miguel Almeida, in the results release.

“We believe that we will continue this growth path, even assuming that the telecommunications market in Portugal will remain challenging in the near future”, adds the manager.

Overall, “it was another quarter of very solid operational and financial results, which support an optimistic view regarding the future of NOS, even recognizing the demanding market environment that is expected for the coming times”, continues Miguel Almeida, highlighting that the operator was recognized, at an international level, for its sustainability practices.

“We were distinguished by Time magazine as one of the ‘Most Sustainable Companies in the World’ and by the Financial Times as one of the ‘Europe’s Climate Leaders’. Being one of the only Portuguese companies present on both lists, and the only one in the telecommunications sector, is a source of great pride and reflects the consistency and progress of our sustainability strategy”, he concludes.

Revenues rose, cinema more penalized

Between January and September, consolidated revenues rose 2% to 1,336.9 million euros and earnings before taxes, interest, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) rose 4.2% compared to the same period in 2024, to 618 million euros, with telecommunications EBITDA growing 4.3% to 569.1 million.

Consolidated revenue grew, despite the impact of the drop in revenue in the Cinema and Audiovisual business in the quarter, says NOS, which explains that between July and September, “the absence of ‘blockbusters’ caused revenue to fall by 20.9%”.

Over the nine months as a whole, “and as a result of a first half of the year with box office successes such as Lilo & Stitch, Minecraft or Mission Impossible, accumulated revenues in this business area fell 0.5% to 74.8 million euros”, he adds.

Telecommunications revenues in the corporate segment rose 7.7% to 327.9 million euros, “with strong dynamism in large companies”, and IT revenues, “which combine results from NOS and Claranet Portugal, increased 3.1% to 111.6 million euros, with strong growth of 10.6% in Services revenues, countering the lower performance of the more volatile Equipment and Licenses segment”.

EBITDA in the IT and Cinema & Audiovisual areas showed growth of 13.7% and 0.3%, respectively, to 14.3 and 34.6 million euros.

“In a complex competitive context, NOS gained 219 thousand new services compared to the same period last year, says the operator, noting that, in mobile services, based on the ‘Stand Alone’ 5G network, the company “grew 184 thousand new services”.
