The Federal Court of the Eastern District of New York did not explain the reason why the sentencing date of “El Mayo” Zambada, who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges, was advanced.
Tijuana, December 1 (ZETA).- The Judge Brian Cogan established January 12, 21026 as the new date to issue a sentence against Ismael Zambada Garcíaknown as “May“. The hearing will take place at 10:00 in the morning in the federal court located in Brooklyn, New York.
The Federal Court for the Eastern District of New York modified the judicial calendar of the case against Zambada García. The court did not provide information regarding the specific reasons which led to advancing the sentencing date.
In August 2025, Zambada García appeared before a US federal court where he pleaded guilty to two charges related to drug trafficking. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confirmed that the co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel was in the custody of US authorities.
“I recognize the great damage that illegal drugs have caused to the population of the United States, Mexico and other places. I assume my responsibility in all of this and I apologize to all those who have suffered or been affected by my actions,” said El Mayo, during his appearance.
DEA Director Terry Cole said during a news conference that the guilty plea showed that drug trafficking leaders are not beyond the reach of justice.
“When I joined this case years ago, I was told we were chasing ghosts. Today we proved once again that no one is far from our reach,” Terry said.
The DEA indicated that the case was built since 2020 with international cooperation between different organizations from several continents. Attorney General Pam Bondi participated in the official announcement alongside Cole on August 28, 2025.
