Omar García Harfuch announces actions against extortion of the lemon sector in Michoacán

Omar García Harfuchhead of the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported that security measures will be reinforced to protect lemon producers in Michoacán, in the face of threats and cases of extortion related to organized crime.

During his appearance before the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) of the Chamber of Deputies, the official explained that this Tuesday he will hold a meeting with Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and with the Secretary of National Defense, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, in order to evaluate the situation and review the progress in the investigation of the murder of Bernardo Bravo, leader of the “limoneros” guild.

“On instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum, tomorrow I will be, your servant and the general secretary, General Trevilla, we will be in Michoacán tomorrow, with the governor and other people specifically, to look at the issue of lemon extortion; “Several arrests have been made in this very unfortunate case that we all know, there is important progress, there have been arrests and we are going to continue with this,” he said at a press conference.

Regarding self-defense groups, such as the so-called “Purepecha Army of Michoacan Freedom”García Harfuch indicated that there are several organizations of this type in different entities, although without specifying their exact number. He stressed that each case must be carefully analyzed, since some of these groups maintain possible links with organized crime.

“There are several groups formed, we would have to see exactly which groups, because there are several groups, I am not talking about in Michoacán, I am talking about in several places, where we have all seen that a group is established as if it were a self-defense group, but it can also have certain links with organized crime, I am not talking specifically about the group to which it refers, each one would have to be reviewed,” he commented.

He also denied that he had suffered an attack, as journalist Raymundo Riva Palacio stated in his column this Monday. However, he confirmed that there are many alerts in this regard, which are discarded.

“I have not received attacks. There are too many alerts that are dismissed, discarded and investigated permanentlyand that’s what we’re always doing. In that house what you are referring to, it is a very public house, I do not live there, it is an office that has a bedroom, it is very public, because in the internal process we were all there, so we did not have any prior warning,” he assured.
