We all remember Netflix’s Riverdale for the bizarre plot, but there was also a lot of drama surrounding the cast. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, KJ Apa gets real about the more scandalous side of working on a coming-of-age TV show.
“There’s a lot of drama that comes on shows like that,” he said. “Not to say in like a gossipy kind of way, but it’s just part of the environment, I guess. Part of the deal.”
When Riverdale first started, most of the main cast were in their late teens or early twenties. KJ Apa was only 19 years old when he started playing Archie in season one, and his life changed forever.
“I was a virgin when I started on that show, too, for the first couple years,” he said. “I was a proud Christian boy. I was.”
But the environment on the Riverdale set was entirely different from KJ’s sheltered life in Auckland, New Zealand.
“You sort of just have sex with them, and then you just sort of see what happens,” he told Entertainment Weekly, talking about the dynamic between the cast members. “It’s just part of the deal.”
Multiple Riverdale co-stars were in public relationships with each other. Cole Sprouse (Jughead) and Lili Reinhart (Betty) were a couple for the first two years of the series. Camilla Mendes (Veronica) and Charles Melton (Reggie) also had an on-and-off relationship during the show.
“You have sex with them and stuff, and then things start happening, and then things get a little complicated, and then you’re on set, and now you’re fighting with them,” KJ said.
He’s never been public with any of his Riverdale co-stars, but these statements definitely don’t help the rumours. KJ Apa had multiple on-screen romances in Riverdale, including an infamous shower sex scene with Camila Mendes. At the time, loads of people were curious about the real nature of these relationships off-screen, but KJ prefers to keep his love life private.
KJ was with model Clara Berry for roughly four years. They have a four-year-old son together.
Despite all the messy breakups and the chaotic hook-up culture, the Riverdale cast still stay in touch.
“We have a big group chat,” Vanessa Morgan, who played Toni, told People. “And then we have, obviously, the separate ones.”
