One person has been killed and three others have been wounded after a crash between two small planes in Colorado.

A Cessna 172 and an Extra EA-300 collided mid-air while both pilots were attempting to land on the runway at the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport at the same time.

Footage shows a charred area in the middle of the airport, after one of the aircraft burst into flames.

Just the tail, a wing, and a lone tire left can be distinguished in the middle of the wreckage.

Plumes of smoke was seen rising from the wreckage after witnesses of the crash rushed in to try and extinguish the flames until firefighters arrived.

The incident happened at around 10.40am on Sunday, and forced police and emergency service to scramble to the scene.

Morgan County Under sheriff Jon Horton told Denver7 that the Cessna was on its final approach to the airport when it was struck mid-air by the other plane.

Four people altogether were involved in the crash, two in each aircraft.

Horton said the person who died was flying in the Extra EA 300. The other occupant was hospitalized, but the extent of their wounds is still unclear.

The two passengers of the Cessna walked away with only minor injuries.

A country official said: ‘We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic event.

‘Additionally, we want to thank the citizens who assisted in trying to extinguish the fire until the fire department and first responders arrived on the scene.’

An investigation headed by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board has been launched and is set to begin today.
