In the last three years, Claims handled by insurance companies within the accident and illness branch grew 34%going from 2.2 to 2.9 million people with medical expenses insurance, and currently only 10% of the population has this protection, according to the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS).
According to figures from the organization, only in the first half of 2025, Insurers paid 63,675 million pesos for medical claims in response to illnesses and accidents10% more compared to the same period in 2024, where 57,925 million pesos were allocated.
Norma Alicia Rosasgeneral director of the organization, commented for this newspaper that “in a decade it went from 8 million people with private health coverage to 14 millionsince insurers pay 354 million pesos every day for the protection of Mexicans.”

Labor benefit
The director of AMIS highlighted that two thirds of the insured population have medical coverage as a benefit at work. He added that the fact that employees are treated and recover faster is a support that boosts productivity.
“In addition to being an incentive, it also reduces absenteeism, by ensuring that employees themselves receive prompt attention, without having to wait in lines to schedule a surgery.”
