Orlando Pirates coaching appointment: Why they chose Ouaddou

Orlando Pirates have stunned the South African football scene by naming Moroccan tactician Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach, a move that has sparked major debate and curiosity among supporters.

The Buccaneers made the announcement official on Monday morning, putting an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the club’s coaching vacancy. Ouaddou replaces Jose Riveiro, who guided the team for three successful seasons before accepting a new challenge at Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Riveiro, who joined Pirates in July 2022, brought silverware and stability to the Soweto giants. Under his leadership, the club lifted three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups, establishing themselves as consistent contenders.

However, with the Spaniard’s departure at the end of the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership campaign, Pirates faced the daunting task of finding a successor capable of maintaining momentum, and possibly exceeding it.

Ouaddou’s arrival sends shockwaves

Instead of turning to one of the high-profile names touted in the media, Pirates opted for a more unconventional choice. Abdeslam Ouaddou, previously in charge at AS Vita Club and most recently with Marumo Gallants, emerged as the man trusted to lead the Bucs forward.

Despite only managing 12 league matches for Gallants, earning five wins, four draws and three defeats, Ouaddou’s impact proved vital in steering the club clear of relegation. His tactical acumen and character impressed the Pirates hierarchy, especially during a direct clash with his former side.

“We’ve found a hidden diamond” – Merafe

Pirates media officer Thandi Merafe lifted the lid on the club’s decision-making, revealing a deliberate strategy rooted in unearthing untapped talent.

“We’ve seen how in the past they’ve always managed to get it right, and getting the hidden diamond,” said Merafe on Radio 2000. “I use that term because more often than not, we bring in people that the general public doesn’t know about.”

She described Ouaddou as the embodiment of the club’s forward-thinking ethos.

“Our management has been working tirelessly to prepare the team for the upcoming season, making sure they get the right people in the right space.”

Ouaddou earns praise for professionalism under pressure

According to Merafe, Ouaddou’s conduct during intense moments left a lasting impression.

“I think the one match where we played against him [at Gallants], you can see the behaviour of the coach when he’s under pressure, the attitude, and the professionalism. He came out as someone who is professional and a gentleman of the game.”

Her comments reinforce the belief that Pirates are not just investing in a tactician, but in a leader who mirrors the club’s values and long-term ambitions.

Will Ouaddou survive at Orlando Pirates?
