Orlando Pirates confirm the permanent departure of rising star

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the permanent transfer of promising winger Mohau Nkota to Saudi Pro League outfit Ettifaq Club, in a move that surprised many supporters.

While the Soweto giants continue their pre-season preparations in Spain under newly appointed head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the club has opted to part ways with one of its standout young talents.

In an official statement, Pirates revealed.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that an agreement has been reached for the permanent transfer of Mohau Nkota to Ettifaq Club in the Saudi Pro League.”

Nkota’s move hinges on personal terms and medical

The transfer remains subject to Nkota agreeing personal terms and successfully passing a medical. The 20-year-old, currently with the Buccaneers on their European tour, is expected to finalise the deal shortly.

“The move is subject to the 20-year-old agreeing to personal terms and passing a medical,” Pirates stated, signalling that only formalities remain before Nkota completes the switch.

From Diski starlet to first-team regular

Nkota’s journey from the DStv Diski Challenge squad to becoming a mainstay in the senior team was nothing short of remarkable. Promoted at the start of the 2024/2025 season by former head coach Jose Riveiro, the Kimberley-born attacker impressed immediately.

He made his senior debut on 19 October 2024 in the Carling Black Label Cup against Magesi FC, replacing Monnapule Saleng at halftime. That appearance sparked a breakthrough season where Nkota played 39 matches, scored seven goals and provided five assists.

“Nkota’s departure comes after a standout debut season in the Buccaneers’ senior squad, where he featured in 39 official matches and registered 12 goal contributions,” the club reiterated.

Nkota’s brilliance lights up domestic and continental stage

Nkota quickly became a fan favourite with memorable performances both locally and in the CAF Champions League. His brace against AmaZulu in domestic competition and another against CR Belouizdad on the continent highlighted his big-game temperament.

His stunning strike against Belouizdad earned widespread acclaim. And stood out as one of the most spectacular goals of the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League campaign.

“Among the many highlights of his breakthrough season were his two braces. One against AmaZulu… and the other on the continental stage against Algerian giants CR Belouizdad,” the club noted.

As Nkota embarks on the next chapter of his football journey, the club wished him nothing but success in his new venture.

“Everyone at Orlando Pirates wishes Mohau Nkota the very best as he begins this exciting new chapter in his career. May he continue to soar and carry the Buccaneers’ spirit with pride, because remember. Once and Always!”
