Orlando Pirates set to loan out two stars

Orlando Pirates have decided to send talented shot-stopper Sphamandla Gumede out on loan again, continuing their strategy of developing young talent through regular game time. The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who joined the Buccaneers from ABC Motsepe League side Dondol Stars two seasons ago, has yet to make his senior debut for the Soweto giants.

A source close to the club confirmed the plans, stating.

“The team believes he won’t break into the first team this season, and that’s why they are looking at loaning him out again. They are grooming him for the future, and that’s why they want him to keep playing while on loan.”

Goalkeeping department overhaul underway

Gumede isn’t the only keeper expected to head out. Pirates are reportedly looking to streamline their goalkeeping options by loaning out at least two players. The club wants to settle on three senior goalkeepers, Siyabonga Dladla, Melusi Buthelezi, and Sipho Chaine, while promoting a DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) keeper to train with the first team.

Sources suggest that alongside Gumede, Ethan Visagie could also make a temporary move away from the club this season.

Uncertain destination for Pirates’ Gumede

Gumede played the previous season on loan at Orbit College, where he gained valuable game time and continued to sharpen his skills between the posts. However, Pirates have yet to finalise his next move. Even as several clubs continue to monitor his situation closely in hopes of securing his services for the upcoming campaign.

While Pirates’ long-term vision for Gumede remains clear. Supporters will now watch closely to see where the young keeper will continue his growth during the 2025/2026 campaign.

Should Orlando Pirates let the duo go?
