Gouveia e Melo and Marques Mendes end the cycle of 28 presidential debates broadcast on RTP, SIC and TVI, ranging from November 17th to December 22ndaccording to the calendar presented by television channels to candidates.
Medialivre’s complaint has to do with the fact that it was excluded from these debates and there is allegedly a exclusivity agreement regarding the debates.
“Medialivre has become aware that the participating entities have agreed to conclude yet another exclusivity agreement, this time with the aim of debates for the presidential elections”, the complaint reads.
“The three FTA channels [de sinal aberto] proposed to presidential candidates to hold 28 face-to-face debates, in prime time. This represents a huge television investment of generalist channels”, mentioned RTP, SIC and TVI.
“In this sense, we consider that carrying out other debatesin the same period, is unreasonable because it would contribute to diverting the attention of spectatorsdamaging the efforts of the three FTA channels and, secondly, the clarification of voters, as it would reach significantly lower audiences”, they concluded.
In a statement about the television debates on the same day, the National Elections Commission (CNE) said that “is not compatible with the objectiveswhich must be ensured during electoral periods, information control practices through exclusion from social mediain an anti-competitive matrix, avoiding competing freely and conditioning the objective of exponentiating information through all means of social communication that are available to ensure the public electoral service”.
In this context, he announced that would communicate its position to the Social Communication Regulatory Entity (ERC) and the Competition Authority (AdC) “so that appreciate the facts and, if they so understand, speak out within the scope of their respective competences”.
