Ex-Oasis’ drummer Zak Starkey reveals biggest ‘punch up’ he saw between Noel & Liam and if he’ll return to The Who

FIGHTS between Noel and Liam Gallagher in Oasis have become music legend.

But their former drummer Zak Starkey insists he never saw the brothers scrapping.

I’m sitting with him in London’s Soho Sanctum Hotel as he promotes his supergroup Mantra of the Cosmos’ new single, Domino Bones (Gets Dangerous).

“There was a punch-up when I left,” Zak tells me in a whisper. “They were throwing furniture and everything.

“But when I was there, all we did was laugh and play amazing music.

“I learned so much from how hard working they were.

“If it says 5.30pm, they are there at 5.10pm. Their work ethic is incredible. It was sleeves up for 12 hours a day.”

Zak, who drummed for the band for four years until 2008, reveals there was one major turning point for Oasis, though.

He recalls: “When Kasabian came on tour with Oasis, we played Benicassim festival in Spain.

“We’d had three weeks off and were at home watching fng TV. We were on at 2am.

“Kasabian were on at midnight. Noel went, ‘I’m not going on at 2am, switch it’. ‘Wishing I was there’ “So we went on at 12 and because we’d had three weeks off, it was a bit sloppy.

“Them guys kicked the fing st out of us. They did a 20-minute drum solo. It was like Black Sabbath.

“They destroyed us. But it was the greatest thing that ever happened to Oasis, because we had to pick it up pretty fing quick.”

Zak adds with a laugh: “In the middle, Tom Meighan went, ‘This one’s for Noel and Liam, you fers’.

“Liam went to me, ‘Did he actually say that?’. I love that attitude. Everyone needs a reality check at times. And they gave us one.”

So, I ask, what kind of telly left Oasis in such a sloppy hole? “Liam used to say, ‘You have the big three — Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale’,” Zak adds, rolling his eyes as he mainlines his umpteenth black coffee.

“It’s like heroin. It starts with Richard and Judy and ends at 9pm. We might as well put a fing spike in you.”

Zak won’t be part of the Oasis reunion, saying he texted them asking why he hadn’t made the cut and was “gutted” to learn they had Joey Warnoker in on the sticks instead. “I don’t know anything about Joey, apart from he’s not a mod,” Zak says with a laugh.

“I think they will get through it without falling out. I will be wishing I was up there. “I couldn’t watch The Who because I know they’d be doing it all wrong.”

He is the greatest rock ’n’ roll drummer in the world. He’s better now than he was then

Zak Starkey

Talking of Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, they parted company with Zak twice last month after accusing him of dropping “two bars” during a gig at the Royal Albert Hall. Zak says he may be back in the fold again as the band prepare for a major tour in the US.

He adds with a wry smile: “I spoke to Roger last week and he said, ‘Don’t take the drums out of the warehouse yet, in case we need you’. There’s no grudge, it’s fing music. In the beginning, they were the maddest band.

“Pete is incredibly intimidating. He called me a ct and gobbed on my drum riser. That was very early on.”

Asked what his dad, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, made of his dismissal, Zak adds: “I spoke to my dad about it and he watched it and stuck up for me. But he’s my dad, isn’t he?

“He wasn’t happy. He saw the show on TV and was a bit like, ‘What the f?’. “He didn’t think anything was a sackable offence. Apart from the ticket price.”

As the son of a Beatle, I ask what guidance Ringo gave him over the years. “My dad never opened the doors for me,” Zak says.

‘Mad pop single’

“He’d watch me and say the most cutting fing st.

He loved Oasis gigs. I spoke to him after one and he told me, ‘It’s been a long time since I’ve seen teenagers throwing beer over each other’. “I know he loves it, but that’s what you’re going to get from him.

“But I’d say to him, ‘Why does the Abbey Road remix sound like Supertramp?’. “He was like, ‘The drum sounds good’. I said, ‘It’s not about the drums, Dad. I learned that when I was 19’.

“But he is the greatest rock ’n’ roll drummer in the world. He’s better now than he was then.”

With Oasis off limits and The Who dates still up in the air, Zak is busying himself with finishing the 14 tracks Mantra have created — with Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder and Bez and Oasis bass player Andy Bell.

For Domino Bones (Get Dangerous), Noel got on board, too. Zak explains: “It was a track Noel did with Shaun a few years ago, but it didn’t really fit with High Flying Birds.

“It’s a mad pop single and I’m hoping to have a demographic of four to 60.” Looking back at his career, I ask Zak if he ever takes a moment to pinch himself.

“All of my dreams have come true,” he says. “Who’s on the phone? Oh, it’s Oasis. Oh, Johnny Marr, the greatest British guitarist, is on the phone.”

With a glint in his eye, Zak adds: “Look, when I was 12 and I was playing in clubs, I didn’t realise I was going to turn out like f*ing David Beckham.

“What can I say?”

I think that sums it up perfectly.

GEORGINA RODRIGUEZ knew how to thrill when she wore this black laced-up dress to a party for Netflix in Madrid.

The model, who is the partner of Cristiano Ronaldo, looked amazing, despite revealing her reality show I Am Georgina won’t be returning for a fourth series.

She said: “It has been a lot of work and requires so much effort.

“I think that it has given me the opportunity to show the real me to the world. However, at the moment, I do not plan to continue with the reality show.”

LOST TRACK BEHIND ROB & GARY RIFT

TAKE THAT’s long-lost single was the root of the rivalry between Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow, its writer and producer Ian Levine says.

I told last month that an unreleased track called Falling For You Girl, recorded by all five members, above, had been unearthed and the team behind it were hoping to get it out.

Now Ian has said Robbie was given the lead vocals on the song, which caused a row with bandmate Gary.

Recalling their sessions in 1992, he said: “The reason Gary hated me is because Robbie was mucking around in the studio when we were doing I Found Heaven.

“I said, ‘Robbie, you’ve got a really nice voice, you sound like one of the Bee Gees’, and he said, ‘Don’t be silly, I’m a backing singer’.

“I said, ‘No, I want to make you a lead singer’.

“But Gary didn’t like it and he went crying to manager Nigel Martin-Smith going, ‘I’m the lead singer! I don’t want to be stuck with one of the others’.

“I insisted, and Falling For You Girl is almost all Robbie.”

Now Ian, who also worked on A Million Love Songs and Could It Be Magic, hopes the song will finally see the light of day.

He added: “The only way it’ll get released is if the fans encourage the boys to put it out. It’s fantastic.”

SABRINA CARPENTER will drop a new album called Man’s Best Friend on August 29.

She announced the record last night and it comes just ten months after her smash Short n’ Sweet, which returned to No1 for a fifth time last month.

The album will feature her new single Manchild, which is on course to go to No1 this Friday, and comes ahead of two shows at BST Hyde Park in London on July 5 and 6.

AFTER celeb haunt Chiltern Firehouse burned down last year, a new restaurant has popped up that’s proving very popular with A-listers.

Just in time for summer, Town on Drury Lane, in Covent Garden, central London, has become the go-to place.

It’s thanks to the menu from acclaimed British chef Stevie Parle, along with fancy cocktails.

I’m told Gary Lineker is even a fan.

The six dog breeds most likely to get DIARRHOEA revealed by scientists – and why Jack Russells evade dreaded ‘poonami’

SCIENTISTS have revealed the six dog breeds most likely to suffer from diarrhoea.

It turns out some pups are unfortunately more susceptible than others.

According to researchers, the Jack Russell Terrier and Chihuahua are less likely to experience the messy condition[/caption]

Roughly one in every 12 dogs in the UK will be diagnosed with diarrhoea each year, according to a new study.

The study, published today in the journal PLOS One, revealed that the following dog breeds are most at risk of a “dreaded poonami”:

  • Maltese
  • Miniature Poodle
  • Cavapoo
  • German Shepherd
  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Cockapoo

There may even be a “genetic element to the condition,” the study said.

That means there’s something within the genes of these six breeds that makes them more likely to get diarrhoea than others.

With a pool of about 2.25million dogs, lead author Dan O’Neill, of the Royal Veterinary College, UK, and his colleagues, discovered that there were two breed least likely to suffer.

According to researchers, the Jack Russell Terrier and Chihuahua are less likely to experience the messy condition.

The researchers note that it is the diets and exercise habits of different breeds may influence this.

The study relied on data from vets around the country.

So the researchers added that the different likelihoods of owners taking their dog to the vet in the first place could have skewed the results.

The condition is most common in dogs under three years old or older than nine years, the study said.

Young pups that often eat things they shouldn’t may also have digestive issues, while older dogs may experience it as a complication of ageing.

More than 80 per cent of suffering pups get better after one trip to the vets, the researchers also found, suggesting the condition is short-lived.

“Experiencing the dreaded “poonami” with your dog is one of those events any dog owner fears,” Dr. O’Neill said in a statement.

“This new study shows that diarrhoea events are very common in dogs but that owners should not panic.

“No matter how bad the deluge, most dogs will recover in a few days after veterinary treatment.”

Brian Wilson has passed away aged 82, his family announced[/caption]

Performing at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, the icon belted out a range of historic tracks.

He performed the famous tune Surfin’ USA, Help Me Rhonda and California.

Wilson appeared onstage as part of his 2022 US Summer Tour in July of that year.

Today, the music legend’s family announced the tragic news that he passed away following a health battle.

In a post shared on Instagram on Wednesday, Wilson’s family wrote: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away.

It comes as…

  • Brian Wilson dead at 82: Rock icon and Beach Boys founder dies
  • Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones leads tributes
  • Tragic health battle in his final days left him “unable to feed himself”
  • Wilson planned to continue work despite his diagnosis
  • One of his albums was ranked second-best of all time

“We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving.

“We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”

Tributes are starting to roll in from fans and celebrities alike.

The Rolling Stones legend Ronnie has lead the tributes to the star and confirmed his world is “in mourning” following the passing of Brian and fellow musician, Sly Stone.

Celebrated as a spectacular songwriter, Wilson was responsible for initial successes including Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, and I Get Around.

Other famous tunes include All Summer Long, Don’t Worry Baby, and California Girls.

Born in Inglewood, California, Wilson formed the band – first called the Pendletones – as a teenager with his brothers Dennis and Carl.

He was the eldest and last surviving of the trio.

Brian played bass, Carl lead guitar and Dennis was on drums.

The Beach Boys rocketed to fame during the 1960s, going from local California band to national hitmakers – and international ambassadors of surf and sun.

As much as Wilson had a gift, he also battled demons.

He was tormented by his obsession with achieving perfection, which inflicted stress and exhaustion.

A judge signed off on a conservatorship for the Beach Boys legend just months after he was diagnosed with dementia in 2024.

He consented to the agreement and had no objections.

Wilson’s doctor said the musician suffered from a “major neurocognitive disorder” and needed help making healthcare decisions.

The judge’s decision to approve Wilson’s conservatorship came as the pop icon prepared to launch new music this year.

In 1970, the Beach Boys star started working on a country album with the band’s former manager Fred Vail on lead vocals.

The project was paused but was later picked up again by the two musicians.

The album had been due for release in 2025 and Wilson was due to be featured on guest vocals, according to Rolling Stone.

Brian Wilson's illness and conservatorship

A judge signed off on a conservatorship for Beach Boys legend Wilson just months after he was diagnosed with dementia in 2024.

He consented to the agreement and had no objections.

Wilson’s doctor said the musician suffered from a “major neurocognitive disorder” and needed help making healthcare decisions.

The judge also agreed to a stipulation requested by an attorney for Wilson’s eldest daughters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson.

Wilson’s daughters asked that all of his children be added to a text chain from his nurses to receive updates on their father if they choose.

The addition was added to the petition before it was signed by Judge May.

Wilson has seven children, two of whom lived with him.

In his decision, May wrote that “the conservatee lacks the capacity to make his own healthcare decisions.”

His new conservators, manager-publicist Jean Sievers and business manager LeeAnn Hard, were ordered to “consult with the conservatee’s children regarding all material related healthcare decisions.”

Wilson’s lawyer, Robert Frank Cipriano, reported that his client agreed that he needed a conservatorship after his wife’s death.

Melinda, who died at age 77, was previously in charge of her husband’s affairs.

Cipriano said that Wilson was “mostly difficult to understand and gave very short responses to questions and comments” and had issues remembering the names of his other children.

The petition said there wouldn’t be major changes to Wilson’s living arrangements under the conservatorship.

The judge’s decision to approve Wilson’s conservatorship came as the pop icon prepared to launch new music this year.

Inside Brian Wilson’s tragic health battle that left Beach Boys rock icon ‘unable to feed or clothe himself’

BRIAN Wilson’s tragic health battle left the Beach Boys icon “unable to feed or clothe himself.”

It was revealed in early 2024 that he had been living with a degenerative disorder similar to dementia.

The celebrated songwriter was responsible for Beach Boys hits including Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, and I Get Around.

Last year, the musician’s family sought to place him under a conservatorship after it was deemed he was “unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health.”

A petition to oversee Wilson’s affairs was filed in January after the death of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May said there was “clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” reported Variety.

Carnie and Wendy requested a stay on the decision but when the stipulation was granted, they didn’t ask for any further delay.

In his decision, May wrote that “the conservatee lacks the capacity to make his own healthcare decisions.”

The petition said there wouldn’t be major changes to Wilson’s living arrangements under the conservatorship.

It also suggested that despite his impairments, Wilson can still “continue to work on current projects.”

His assets are in a trust and are not being overseen as part of the conservatorship.

Celebrated songwriter

Celebrated as a spectacular songwriter, Wilson was responsible for famous tunes including All Summer Long, Don’t Worry Baby, and California Girls.

Born in Inglewood, California, Wilson formed the band – first called the Pendletones – as a teenager with his brothers Dennis and Carl.

He was the eldest and last surviving of the trio.

Their first song, Surfin’, was released by Candix Records.

The record label changed the band’s name without their permission to play to the band’s laid back, surfer sound.

A year later, they signed with Capitol and released their debut album, Surfin’ Safari.

The Beach Boys rocketed to fame during the 1960s, going from local California band to national hitmakers – and international ambassadors of surf and sun.

Their 1966 album Pet Sounds was voted No. 2 in Rolling Stone’s list of the best 500 albums in 2003.

As much as Wilson had a gift, he also had demons.

He was tormented by his obsession with achieving perfection.

Taking to TikTok, the mum-of-four shared a video on her social media page @livsmeh, which currently has 10.9K followers.

Livvy responded to someone who commented on a previous video of hers saying: “you must wash new bedding.”

However, the mum responded with something slightly different, and it has very much got people talking.

She explained that she “never” washes new bedding and has never washed her new clothes either.

Livvy also added: “I sometimes don’t even wash clothes I get from the charity shop. That’s gross isn’t it?”

She explained to her followers that she didn’t understand why people would wash their new bedding or new clothes.

The mum then went on to explain that she didn’t even wash the brand-new newborn clothes she bought.

Livvy then asked her followers: “What am I doing wrong here? Why? They’re new.”

Before then telling her followers that she didn’t want to know the answer to those questions.

After 24 hours of the video being shared, Livvy’s video received over 10.2k views, with 90 people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts.

Some were mixed.

One wrote: “Same here. Mum-of-five, new bedding straight on, new clothes straight in the drawers, charity shop clothes sniff test will decide whether it gets washed or not.

“If it smells like the person smokes it goes through the washer twice, if not in the drawer they go!”

A second added: “If you wash them, then you have to dry them and then you have to put them away. No thank you.”

A third said: “Not gross in my opinion.”

The charity shop non-washing has kinda given me the ick

TikTok comment

However, others didn’t agree.

One commented: “Always wash before use.

“One of my kids got hives from the factory finishings on a body warmer.”

A second said: “You lost me at a charity shop.”

Whilst someone else wrote: “Oh I’m more than fine with new clothes and bedding, but the charity shop clothes not being washed has been scratching all over a little bit.”

Another added: “The charity shop non-washing has kinda given me the ick.”

Laundry tips

Catherine Green, sustainable cleaning expert at smol shared her laundry tips.

How often should you be remaking your bed?

When it comes to your bed, maintaining a hygienic sleep setup can actually improve your sleep quality, helping you start every day better.

Most people shed 500 million skin cells per day and a lot of that ends up in bed for dust mites to feed on. And those with asthma or allergies might see symptoms worsen by sleeping on dirty sheets!

You want to be washing your sheets once a week – or every 10 days if you don’t suffer from allergies and wear nightclothes. Bedding builds up with sweat, skin cells and oils quickly, even if it doesn’t look dirty.

Using an effective detergent like smol’s will still give you a great clean on a 20°C cycle – that’s better for the planet and your energy bills!

What temperature do smol recommend then?

For your regular weekly washes I recommend washing most loads at 20°C for 30 minutes. It’s gentler on fabrics, slashes energy use, and still delivers excellent stain removal with the right detergent. A colder wash can actually be more effective if you opt for a bio detergent as its enzymes need cooler water; too hot and they lose their ability to digest stains. A wash at 60°c (unless you have silk sheets) every now and again can help kill off dust mites and other nasties.

What’s the difference between bio and non-bio detergent?

Bio detergents contain enzymes, which are especially good at breaking down tough stains like food, grass, or sweat. It’s best used in mid to low temperature washes (ideally between 20-40°C) as anything hotter can cause them not to work effectively.

Non-bio skips the enzymes, which in turn makes it more suitable for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Although non-bio doesn’t contain enzymes, it’s still great at removing stains and keeping your clothes clean, you just may need to use a slightly higher temperature setting to aid with the cleaning process.

Watch the tense moment Love Islander ends relationship on the spot after he gets the ick

IT may have only been a couple of days in the villa, but one boy already knows what he wants – and doesn’t want.

In tense scenes on tonight’s Love Island Ben calls it quits with Toni after admitting she gave him the ‘ick’ after her reaction to Sophie Lee being sent home.

As the Islanders are still reeling about Shakira Khan choosing Harry Cooksley, Toni says: “Boys, it’s your turn, just saying – I don’t think you’re gonna be safe.”

Ben replies: “Are you saying me in particular?”

Toni adds: “No it’s about boys, not everything is about you.”

Her comments don’t go down well with Ben and he walks off – leaving the others surprised by his reaction.

Meg later tells him: “That was a bit much…I don’t get what she said that was really offensive?”

Ben replies: “She said, ‘Not everything is about you…’ I just got the ick.”

Ben also tells Shakira he’s got the ick with Toni and Shakira lets Toni know about this and suggests she pulls him for a chat.

Toni does exactly that and asks Ben: “I’ve heard from people you said I’m giving you the ick?”

It quickly turns sour and he tells her: “I don’t feel like me and you have got that spark if I am being honest.”

Looking taken aback she replies ‘okay’ as he continues: “That is just me being honest but I know when I have got it with someone. That I feel it straight away. But yeah I don’t feel like you and me have got it.”

Toni tells him: “I mean I don’t think that technique is going to work for you here.”

He asks what she means and she replies: “Right away off the bat.”

Smirking, he responds: “You’d be surprised. I feel like sparks have already been made.”

A very unhappy Toni hits back:  “Good luck pal.”
