Where does Carlos Alcaraz’s French Open triumph rank amongst sport’s greatest comebacks?

Facing three championship points against the world No.1 in the fourth set of the French Open final, the writing was not just on the wall for Carlos Alcaraz, but possibly being etched, in the form of Jannik Sinner’s name, into the Coupe des Mousquetaires.

What happened next will go down in tennis and even sporting history as one of the greatest comebacks ever.

Alcaraz, who had been two sets down, saved the match points, won the fourth set and took the fifth on a tie-break to seal victory in five hours, 29 minutes.

‘For the sport it’s something amazing,’ said his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero. ‘Having these two guys fighting for big trophies, we have to be very happy about it in tennis. They know they have to play unbelievable to beat the other guy.’

But where does it rank alongside sport’s other great comebacks?

1. Istanbul 2005

Six years after Manchester United came back from the dead to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, Liverpool said ‘hold my beer’.

Lucky to be only 3-0 down to an experienced Milan at half-time in Istanbul, Rafa Benitez’s men somehow clawed their way back to 3-3 and took the game to extra-time before winning on penalties.

2. Headingley

Leeds was the scene for two all-rounders’ most iconic Ashes moments and impossible wins. In 1981 Ian Botham’s unbeaten 149 inspired England to victory after following on.

Ben Stokes hit 135 not out, putting on 73 with last man Jack Leach (one) in 2019 for a one-wicket triumph.

3. The Miracle of Medinah

Europe’s golfers were facing a humiliating defeat in the USA in 2012, as they trailed 10-4 on Saturday afternoon.

A dramatic late foursomes win inspired by Ian Poulter closed the overnight gap slightly and then the visitors dominated the singles to triumph 14½-13½.

4. 28-3

Super Bowl LI between the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots will forever be known as ’28-3′ – the lead the Falcons’ held in the third quarter. The only trouble is, the final score was 28-34 – to the Patriots.

5. La Remontada

Why do Spanish clubs talk incessantly about winning a European tie after being thrashed in the first leg? Blame the original remontada (comeback).

Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg of their 2017 last-16 tie. Barca won the return 6-1 to triumph 6-5 on aggregate.

6. Wotta turnaround!

Dave Wottle’s Olympic 800metres triump in Munich in 1972 was one for the ages.

Miles adrift early on and trailing the pack at the bell, the American in a golf cap charged through the field to take the unlikeliest gold medal.

7. Lauda lives

Just six weeks after being read the last rites after a horrifying crash at the 1976 German Grand Prix left him with terrible burns, Niki Lauda was back in Formula One and finished fourth at Monza. He missed out on the world title by a single point.

8. Will power

Injuries and the trauma caused by the fatal 2003 shooting of her half-sister contributed to Serena Williams plunging down the tennis rankings in the mid-2000s.

But a player dubbed the queen of comebacks rose again, defying expectations to win the 2007 Australian Open.

The US Open gets underway this Thursday as 156 of the best players in the world gear up for a brutal golfing examination at Oakmont Country Club.

Famed as ‘golf’s toughest test’, this week’s US Open could well provide one of the most gruelling layouts in recent years.

Fast greens, five-inch deep rough and a 300-yard par three are just some of the challenges awaiting players this week.

Returning to defend the championship is LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau, who won last year’s tournament over Rory McIlroy in dramatic fashion.

But the American will have to come through a stacked field if he is to become a three-time US Open champion, with World No.1 Scottie Scheffler in fine form, having won three of his last four tournaments.

Elsewhere, McIlroy will seek to exorcise his demons after a near-miss 12 months ago, but the Masters champion arrives this week in questionable form after his worst performance of the year at the Canadian Open.

Manchester United to offer first-team player in ‘package deal’ to sign Victor Osimhen

Manchester United are prepared to offer a first-team player in a ‘package deal’ to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli, according to reports in Italy.

Osimhen is one of a number of top strikers who has been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim has made signing a new No. 9 his priority this summer after Manchester United’s dismal 2024-25 campaign in which they slumped to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League.

United were one of only a few top-flight clubs not to have a single player reach double digits in the Premier League.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirzkee’s struggles have prompted Manchester United to express interest in the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko and Osimhen.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Red Devils are ready to approach Napoli with a ‘package deal’ for Nigerian striker Osimhen.

Osimhen has scored 76 goals in 133 appearances for Napoli and helped the club win the Serie A title in 2022-23.

But he does not have a future at the club while Antonio Conte is in charge and was sent on loan to Galatasaray last summer after a deadline-day move to Chelsea collapsed.

Osimhen continued to impress in Turkey, bagging 37 goals in all competitions to help Galatasaray clinch the league title.

His performances caught the eye of Chelsea and Arsenal who, like Manchester United, are keen to add more firepower to their respective squads.

Osimhen is available for £63m but United, facing a difficult summer financially after failing to qualify for the Champions League, are keen to lower that fee by including a player in the deal.

Gazzetta dello Sport say the Manchester giants are considering offering Zirzkee to Napoli as they look to bring Osimhen to Old Trafford.

United spent £36.5m to sign Zirzkee from Bologna last summer but he endured an underwhelming first season in the Premier League, scoring justthree goals.

Zirkzee can become 'superstar' at Man Utd

‘I like Zirkzee – he was unfortunate to get injured when he did, but he’s a real baller and I think he can be a superstar for Manchester United if he can get games under his belt.

‘He needs a regular run. I don’t think he’s had a 10-game stint where he has actually played week in, week out.

‘There were reports that he wasn’t quite fit when he signed, so it took him a bit of time to get up to speed.

‘I think he was just finding his feet when he got injured but I think he’s going to prove a real key player next season.’

Manchester United hero Lee Sharpe told Metro

Manchester United reportedly rejected an approach from Inter Milan for Zirzkee earlier in the summer but are willing to use the Netherlands international as bait in a deal for Osimhen.

Alejandro Garnacho was linked with a move to Naples in January but reports in Italy say the Serie A champions are no longer interested in the United outcast.

But Conte is keen to sign a back-up forward to Romelu Lukaku so could be tempting by Zirkzee in order to get Osimhen off the books.

Osimhen rejected a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia as he ‘dreams’ of playing in the Premier League but looks set to be the subject of another bid from Al Hilal.

The Nigerian is not expected to make a U-turn on his decision, however, leaving Al Hilal to look at other options including Gyokeres and Sesko.

In an interview with Metro, John Obi Mikel – who is close to Osimhen – talked up a move to Manchester United or Arsenal.

‘I hope there is still a Premier League move for him this summer’, the ex-Premier League winner said. ‘I think the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, they still need a striker.

‘I don’t think [Rasmus] Hojlund is the guy for Manchester United. He runs around and works hard but he is not the guy who will score goals, put them in the top four and win them trophies.

‘So for me Manchester United might be the destination. I don’t want to see him in Saudi right now because he still has so much to offer in Europe.

‘It would be a shame to see him go there. So maybe Arsenal, United, Juventus and PSG too [are his options]. Let’s see what happens.’
