Holiday ATM warning that could leave holidaymakers without cash this summer

HOLIDAYMAKERS might end up without cash this summer if they are not aware of this banking feature.

Many travellers choose to withdraw cash at the ATM when they are abroad.

There is a limit on how much money you can take out from a cash machine abroad[/caption]

However many could be unaware that there is a limit to how much you can take out every day

The amount can vary so it is worth checking with your provider ahead of your travels to avoid being caught short.

Below we share how much money each high street bank lets you withdraw each day.

BARCLAYS

The bank of over 20 million Brits lets customers withdraw up to £300 per day when abroad.

This rises to £1000 for those with a premier account.

Barclays said customers have amended their cash limits in their Barclays app then these will apply when abroad as well.

That means if you set your withdrawal limit to £200, you will only be able to take this much out when you are abroad.

You will also be charged a 2.99% fee for withdrawing cash abroad with your Barclays debit card.

That means you would be charged an extra £2.99 for withdrawing £100 abroad.

The fee will also apply if you pay using your debit card.

Lloyds

Lloyds said customers can withdraw up to £800 per day when abroad.

However, it warned the amount you can take out may vary depending on which ATM you choose to withdraw cash from.

Lloyds customers are also charged a 2.99% fee for using their card abroad.

But Club Lloyds members have recently had this fee waived as part of changes to the scheme.

It now costs £5 per month to have a Club Lloyds account after the price was hiked from £3.

Halifax

Halifax is a subsidiary of Lloyds and also has a £800 maximum withdrawal fee.

Customers are also charged a 2.99% fee for using their card abroad.

But from August 1, Halifax Rewards customers will have this charge removed.

It comes as part of a refresh of the banking offer, which will see new features added and some taken away.

SANTANDER

The high street bank said the highest amount that customers can withdraw abroad is £300.

The same rate applies to customers withdrawing cash in the UK.

This applies to Santander customers using the Edge, Edge Up and Everyday current account.

However customers with a Private Current Account, which has a £5 monthly fee, the daily withdrawal limit can be up to £1,500.

Santander warned this may vary depending on the ATM.

NATWEST

NatWest has over 19 million users across the UK, making it another popular bank for customers.

How much you can withdraw from an ATM when abroad depends on what type of account you have.

For example, customers with a student, graduate savings and teen accounts have their limit set at £250 per day.

This increases to £300 for those with premium accounts such as NatWest Silver of Platinum, which offers rewards and travel insurance.

The bank also charges customers a 2.75% fee to use their debit card abroad.

NATIONWIDE

The bank, which has 17 million customers, said current account holders can withdraw up to £500 per day at an ATM abroad.

However, the bank warned overseas banks may put higher limits on transactions.

For safety purposes and customers may find they are only able to withdraw a sterling equivalent of £135 to £150 per transaction.

If customers are affected by this, they can make further withdrawals on the same day up to the accounts withdrawal limit.

Customers may be charged for their transactions.

Nationwide customers are charged a 2.75% fee to use their debit card abroad.

BEWARE OF THIS SIMPLE MISTAKE

If you are travelling abroad this summer you should also be aware of this easy ATM mistake that could cost you.

Cash machines will usually give you the option to pay in the local currency or in pounds.

It may seem like the obvious option to pay in pounds, as it’s more familiar and the currency linked to your card.

However, by choosing this option you could end up paying more for the cash coming out of the ATM or for the goods you’re paying for at the till.

That is because the overseas bank will do the conversion to pounds and the rates are unfavourable.

However, if you choose to pay in the local currency your card will instead do the conversion which is usually much more favourable.

So if you are keen to save cash when abroad, you should opt to pay in the local currency and not pounds.

Are there other options to for spending abroad?

There are several specialist cards that can give you a great exchange rate.

These cards include travel credit cards and pre-paid cards which can let you pay abroad without fees or at a set exchange rate.

Senior Consumer Reporter Olivia Marshall explains all the options.

Travel credit cards: Travel credit cards allow you to spend money abroad without being hit by any fees or hidden charges.

But, they may still charge you for taking cash out.

We recommend the Halifax’s Clarity Card as it won’t charge you for using it abroad, nor are there any fees for withdrawing cash.

But you will be charged interest if you don’t repay your balance in full at a rate of 19.9 per cent.

And you will be charged interest on cash withdrawals until your balance is paid off too, at a rate of between 19.9 and 27.95 per cent depending on your credit score.

In other words, just because you are using plastic abroad doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay these credit cards off like you normally would.

Always pay off your balance before the end of the month with these cards to make sure that any money you saved isn’t wiped away by paying interest.

For more on travel credit cards you can read our guide here.

Pre-paid cards: An alternative to carrying cash around is to get a pre-paid card.

These cards allow you to put a set amount of cash on the card at a fixed exchange rate.

So if the rate is good at the moment, you can put money on your card and it will stay that rate when you are on holiday.

Just keep in mind that these cards can sometimes have hidden costs and charges so be sure to read the small print.

I was so fat I scoffed 10 snacks a day & couldn’t fit in restaurant booths – then I lost 9st with the 4 easiest changes

TIPPING the scales at more than 27st, Tomas Marks felt too fat and insecure to go on dates.

The 25-year-old was too big to fit in restaurant booths, he was “constantly out of breath”, and he was battling crippling anxiety due to his size.

But after years of shame, the airport security officer has completely transformed his life – without the use of weight loss jabs like Ozempic and Mounjaro

Tomas, who shed a whopping 9st 4lbs thanks to a handful of simple lifestyle tweaks, has found a “truly wonderful” woman, who makes him feel like himself again.

“I’ve had too many embarrassing moments in my past to list them,” he tells Sun Health.

“The main ones happened when I was out in public and I was too big to do an activity, or when out in a bar or a restaurant and I didn’t fit in the chairs or struggled to get into booths.

“That really embarrassed me and made me feel terrible about myself.”

Tomas, from Christchurch, Dorset, says his figure affected every part of his life, from his mobility to his mental health.

“I felt terrible both physically and emotionally,” he says.

“I really stood out when out in public, which caused me to have really bad anxiety due to the fear that everyone was looking at me and judging me for my size.”

Tomas admits his eating habits had spiralled out of control, with a typical day involving not just three large meals but constant snacking in between.

“I’d have three meals plus around 10 snacks throughout the day, which, looking back, is wildly unnecessary,” he says.

“A full day of eating back then was easily 3,500 to 4,000-plus calories.

“My snacking was truly out of control. I would regularly find myself in bed at 11pm and just suddenly feel the need to go and raid the cupboards in the kitchen.

“It was like a quick trip to a drive-thru or a whole bag of Doritos and a whole pot of dip.

“My worst snacking was always really late at night, which is something I heavily avoid these days.

“I’d go out for a meal with friends and after dropping them all home I’d get myself something from McDonald’s on the way home.

“Eating was sort of a coping mechanism for me and it was a short-term fix to make me feel slightly better.”

Dating really demoralised me and made me feel hopeless. Now I’ve found a truly wonderful partner

Tomas Marks

After years of feeling “hopeless,” a friend suggested Tomas try MAN v FAT – a programme for men that combines weekly football matches with support to help players lose weight.

The decision marked the beginning of a major transformation – one that led to him to lose an incredible 9st 4lbs in just under two years.

Tomas credits the club, which he joined in November 2022, and intermittent fasting (an eating pattern that involves long periods of not eating) for his weight loss success.

He says: “I rekindled my love for the sport and for playing in goal, which was something I hadn’t done since my time playing youth football.

“I also adopted an intermittent fasting routine between the hours of 8pm and 11am. That’s something I would highly recommend.”

Tomas says cutting out alcohol and learning to meal prep also massively contributed to his weight loss success.

“I still focus on portion control and making sure the meals all have balanced macros,” he adds.

“I did meal prep a lot at the height of my diet so I knew exactly what I was eating and how many calories were in things.”

And as the weight came off, Tomas says his self-worth grew.

“The first sign that it was working was when I no longer felt tired after doing tasks that would’ve had me exhausted before,” he says.

“Friends and people I worked with then noticed and asked if I’d lost weight, which was a really big boost to my confidence.

“I had always struggled with clothes and bought the majority of my wardrobe from online shops that specialised in bigger men, but the biggest change for me was being able to buy normal clothes in any shop.

“I remember a specific moment when I was trying on jeans in a changing room. I put them on and realised that they now fitted me.

“I couldn’t help but get a bit emotional and felt an immense wave of pride.”

How intermittent fasting can help you lose weight

By Eliza Loukou, Health Reporter

THOUGH many diets focus on the foods you’re eating, intermittent fasting is all about when you eat.

Put simply, it involves fasting – going without food – and only eating within a certain time window.

The idea is that it gives your body a break from digesting food, potentially leading to consuming fewer calories than if you were eating more regularly, according to Bupa.

Eating less may also have positive effects on your blood sugar levels, which can be useful if you have pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, it adds.

Some experts believe intermittent fasting triggers a process called autophagy, where your body works to remove damaged cells from your body.

And a study conducted by National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases even showed that following the eating regime may help reduce people’s “addiction” to food by rewiring the brain.

Your body does this when it doesn’t have to focus on digesting food.

There are a few different forms of intermittent fasting, which is loved by Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Aniston and Kourtney Kardashian.

Popular examples include:

  • The 16/8 methodA fasting window of sixteen hours and an eating window of eight hours – you can drink water, milk, tea and coffee while fasting.
  • The 5:2 method: You pick two days a week where you consume about 500 to 600 calories, while following a normal, balanced diet on the remaining five.
  • The 24 hour fast: Not eating for a 24-hour period, either monthly or weekly.
  • Alternate day fasting: Fasting every other day, which Bupa says can be difficult to maintain in the long-term.

There are a number of ways to shorten your eating window – and chances are, you’ve already done it by accident.

It can include:

  • Having a later breakfast
  • Skipping breakfast altogether
  • Having an early dinner

But the diet is certainly not suitable for everyone. Bupa notes that you shouldn’t try it if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have type 1 diabetes
  • Have a history of disordered eating
  • Have anxiety or depression

One of the biggest wins for Tomas was finding a partner.

After years of unsuccessful dating attempts, Tomas says he’s finally found happiness in a relationship.

“I had tried dating on and off over the years but due to my size and lack of confidence, I had little to no success,” he says.

“It really demoralised me and made me feel hopeless about myself.

“I’ve only just recently had some success and I’ve managed to find myself a truly wonderful person, Faye, who I just clicked with.

“I feel comfortable, even with my anxiety issues.

“Dating was a big change for me. Gradually over the course of my weight loss I slowly built up my confidence to the point where I was comfortable with being able to go out and meet new people.”

But Tomas says the number one change has been in his mindset.

“When I look in the mirror, I see a completely different person to who I was before,” he says.

“Before when I looked at myself, I hated myself and the way I looked. Now I’m happy and I’m more confident in myself.”

  3. Meal prep
  4. Quitting alcohol

I’m a single mum and got £4.3k in UC this month – I’ve run out of cash & am begging people to donate to my boob job fund

A SINGLE mother has claimed that she got paid more than £4,300 this month in Universal Credit, but has already run out of money.

As a result, Ebony Wood, 26, who is currently not working and is living off of benefits, is now begging strangers online for cash.

Not only this, but Ebony Wood, 26, is now asking strangers to pay for her to have a boob job

Not only this, but she’s even asking people to donate to her GoFundMe page, so that she can treat herself to a boob job

The young mother, who calls herself Bonnie and lives in a council property, shared a short clip on social media and wrote: “I’ve ran out of Universal Credit, donate to my GoFundMe.”

Clapping back to taxpayers, Bonnie filmed herself cleaning her filthy kitchen sink and said: “I might be a single mum on Universal Credit, but at least I’m not dumb.

“You lot literally have to work 40 hours a week to get half of what I get – I literally get given £4,000 a month from the government.”

While Bonnie asked trolls to “stop putting hate” in her comments, she showed off her messy home and slammed: “If it wasn’t for you lot working full time and paying taxes, I would not even have these grey Tommy Hilfiger leggings.”

But moments later, in response to a comment that accused her of lying about her Universal Credit payments, which are given to UK residents with a low income or those who need help with their living costs, Bonnie shared a screenshot of what she claimed to be her most recent payment – a hefty £4,320.98.

In response to the hater, who blamed her for spreading “rage bait” content online, Bonnie said: “Why would I lie? That’s what I got paid like two weeks ago.

“Don’t be jealous because I get given double what you earn in a month – I practically get your monthly wages in a week.”

On Bonnie’s profile, she has since shared a link to her GoFundMe page, whereby she is asking the public to donate to her boob job fund.

She has an ambitious target of £2,200 and at the time of writing, had raised just £10 thanks to two donations.

While she can’t afford to pay for the surgery herself, the mother claimed that she “deserves to feel good” but stressed that getting the cosmetic work done “isn’t about vanity”.

Social media users fume

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @bonniedontcare, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 344,000 views, 7,503 likes and 1,351 comments.

This honestly infuriates me!!!!

Social media users were horrified by Bonnie’s claims, with many eagerly sharing their views in the comments.

One person said: “This is embarrassing.”

What help is available for parents?

CHILDCARE can be a costly business. Here is how you can get help.

  • 30 hours free childcare  – Parents of three and four-year-olds can apply for 30 hours free childcare a week.
To qualify you must usually work at least 16 hours a week at the national living or minimum wage and earn less than £100,000 a year.
  • Tax credits – For children under 20, some families can get help with childcare costs.
  • Childcare vouchers – If your employer offers childcare vouchers you can get up to £55 a week in tax and national insurance savings.
You pay for your childcare before your tax contributions are taken out.
This scheme is open to new joiners until October 4, 2018, when it is planned that tax-free childcare will replace the vouchers.
  • Tax-free childcare – Available to working families and the self-employed, for every £8 you put in the government will add an extra £2.

Another added: “What in the benefits Britain is going on here?”

A third commented: “Bragging about getting £4k a month but begging for more money from tax payers is mad.”

If it wasn’t for you lot working full time and paying taxes, I would not even have these grey Tommy Hilfiger leggings

Bonnie

At the same time, someone else wrote: “Stop boasting.”

Meanwhile, someone else fumed: “This honestly infuriates me!!!!”

But that’s not all, as another rudely chimed in and questioned: “What in the Jeremy Kyle is happening here?”

Anna and her husband Michael Staples announced they are now proud parents of a son on social media today (Saturday).

They shared a joint instagram post which read: “Baby Staples and Anna are happy and healthy.

“We adore our little man. He is our everything.”

Earlier in the week, Anna updated her fans, revealing she would be having a C-section on Thursday.

Anna won the second season of Love Island Australia with Josh Packham, but the relationship didn’t last on the outside world

The pair called it quits in 2020 after one year together.

Anna later began dating businessman Michael, who owns a tanning brand called Golden Bee.

The couple wed in Greece last year after getting engaged in October 2022.

Michael said of his wife after returning from their honeymoon: “Two weeks on and I still haven’t come back down to earth after marrying the woman of my dreams, best friend and forever love.”

They announced they were expecting their first child in November last year.

At the time of the announcement, Anna wrote on instagram: “This day will forever be one of the BEST of our lives.”

Just before Anna gave birth, Michael paid tribute to her last month.

Alongside a snap of Anna’s huge bump, he wrote: £8 months and counting! It’s hard to find the words to describe the amount of appreciation I have for this woman, as she grows a watermelon size little guy, who expresses love through kicking each and every one of her organs on an hourly basis.”

He continued: “It’s incredible to see you go through all of these physical and emotional changes, with a smile on your face and always love in your heart. I love you.”

Inside Holly Willoughby’s future plans as she’s left without telly show for first time in years

IT has been an incredibly testing few years for former ITV treasure Holly Willoughby, with her work life as she knew it crumbling around her.

For the first time in years the 44-year-old has been left without a TV show – and she’s now at a serious crossroads and is poised to start a new chapter in her career.

A second series of Bear Hunt will not be renewed

Once the princess of ITV, she is currently ‘showless’ with her beloved ITV for the first time in 21 years.

With her time on ITV’s This Morning now a distant memory, Holly was looking likely to land a series of lucrative deals with the streamers.

But in a further blow – her new Netflix show, Bear Hunt, with Bear Grylls, has been axed.

The news comes just weeks after Dancing On Ice was axed and on top of that, she has made the decision to step down from  You Bet!, leaving Stephen Mulhern to present alone.

She is set to appear briefly in the next series, but will no longer be hosting it.

It marks a huge shift in her work with ITV.

One option for the star could be a reboot of Record Breakers, which Holly’s husband Dan Baldwin is already working on.

There is currently no channel attached to the show, which is in its very early stages but sources say it would be a “perfect fit”.

A telly insider said: “Record Breakers is likely to be a prime time hit and it would make perfect sense for Holly to take the reins.

“She has worked alongside Dan before and the pair know what it takes to make great telly.”

She has also been linked to a reboot of Cilla Black’s best-known show, Blind Date.

The Sun told this week how the ITV classic is being revived – and in a surprise twist will go to global streaming service Disney+.

Producers want to keep the tradition of a top British female host, with a shortlist including Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall.

Sources say Holly is also being looked at for a new Channel 4 talent show, currently dubbed Secret Singers, which is searching for raw, undiscovered singing talent.

Love Productions – the creators of The Great British Bake Off and The Piano – have already put out a casting call.

An insider said: “This is likely to be a heartwarming and hugely popular show for all the family.

“They are looking for a the perfect host to make sure it’s a huge success and it could be perfect timing with Holly’s break in TV.”

Holly returned to TV last year after 18 months – she had stepped down from presenting work entirely after discovering a plot to kidnap and murder her.

Evil Gavin Plumb was given three life sentences for planning to break into her home, then sedate, abduct and kill her and her husband.

It came just months after a very public falling out with her co-host Phillip Schofield, which ended with him leaving the show in May 2023.

Changes are happening behind the scenes, too.

Holly has a big decision to make with her media company Roxy after it was revealed she owes a huge amount to the tax man.

Roxy was set up in 2008 by Holly with husband Dan Baldwin.

But it wasn’t until 2022 that Holly filed the first annual accounts for her all-female ran company after she made the decision to leave former talent agency YMU in 2020.

Roxy Media deals with TV show “production activities”, according to its listing on Companies House.

But just three years on, Roxy has now been slapped with a winding up order.

Action against the company was launched in January and the court was told Holly’s company has already settled a bill of £377,000 with the taxman, with an unknown amount still owed.

In recent weeks Holly has turned to close friend Christine Lampard for support.

Like Holly she has enjoyed long stints with ITV, but has also stepped away from them at times.

Sources have said that Holly is inspired by Christine’s career and her work-life balance and is hoping to emulate that herself.

They said: “Holly is ready for a rebrand and has definitely been looking at those around her for inspiration.”

Addressing her incredibly difficult time, Holly recently told The Sunday Times Style Magazine: “It’s been tough. There’s no way of sugar-coating it.”

Discussing why she felt moving forward was her only option, Holly said: “Sometimes things go wrong, but you have to keep going for it because that’s all you can do.”

And it looks like Holly is moving forward – but not before making some serious changes.

Benidorm star reveals she is ‘homeless’ and ‘close to living in a cardboard box’ seven years after end of hit ITV sitcom

THIS Benidorm star has revealed that she now basically lives “like a nomad” sleeping on peoples’ couches, despite being a praised actress.

The star was a long-standing member of the Hotel Solana gang, with the ITV series becoming a fan favourite until it ended seven years ago.

Benidorm ran from 2007 to 2018 – but is set for a comeback[/caption]

However, fast forward to today, and Crissy Rock has revealed that, due to her career, she could end up living “out of a cardboard box”.

Crissy, who played hotel manager Janey York in the sitcom, said that her job means that she’s always on the go, and can’t become “complacent” as her work sends her all over the place.

She told The Express: “Me, I’m like a nomad. I live from place to place to place. My wardrobe is just the boot of my car. If it wasn’t for my friend, I would be living in a hostel or a cardboard box.”

Crissy adds that she “moves around from couch to couch” when back at home in Liverpool, flitting between her friends and family members.

However, the star noted it was her choice to do it, leaving her open for opportunities – including a possible Benidorm reboot.

The Sun exclusively revealed in April that the cast were in early talks to make a comeback for another run.

A source said: “Benidorm was adored by millions when it was suddenly cancelled. Fans will be thrilled to hear ITV wants to bring it back.

“An 11th series hasn’t been commissioned yet, but there’s major excitement building as early talks begin.

“Producers have started to reach out to the show’s stars and are hopeful a decision can be made later this year.”

While she said it would be “brilliant” to bring the show back, Crissy remained tight-lipped about whether she would be a part of it.

Benidorm, which followed a gang of unique British holidaymakers and the quirky staff at the Solana all-inclusive resort in Spain, ran from 2007 to 2018.

The actress appeared as a regular face during the first four series of the show, before becoming less frequent and leaving at the end of series seven.

Sherrie Hewson later replaced her as the Solana’s manager, while Crissy went on to appear on Celebrity Masterchef and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here.

Even though the show was axed in 2018, it went on to win Best Comedy at the TV Choice Awards that year – prompting creator Derren Litten to take a swipe at the channel over the decision.

As he picked up the gong, he told the crowd: “This is a bit awkward, the show’s just been cancelled.”

“I’ve huge respect for ITV — a show that’s getting five and a half million viewers and still picking up awards, but they’ve cancelled it,” he added.

“That takes balls.”

Despite the end of the show being seven years ago, fans continue to flock to ITVX to watch the series.

The all-star cast included Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, Johnny Vegas, Tim Healy, Steve Pemberton and Siobhan Finneran.

Distant moon could have aliens on it – and experts just spotted a ‘mysterious motion’ in its atmosphere

A DISTANT moon in our solar system might mirror Earth’s seasons, according to scientists, who also believe it could be a candidate for finding nearby alien life.

And scientists just spotted a mysterious motion in its atmosphere.

Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, is home to sprawling rivers and lakes of liquid methane, icy boulders and dunes of grains that resemble coffee grounds.

It even has an ocean hiding beneath its surface.

Some 746million miles (1.2billion kilometers) away from Earth, the distant moon is thought to have rain clouds just like Earth.

Unlike seasons on Earth, Titan has a much longer seasonal cycle, with each year on the moon lasting nearly three decades on our planet.

Despite its brutally cold temperatures, which average around -179C (-290F), this strange, alien world appears to have the organic ingredients for life.

Titan is the only moon in our solar system with a significant atmosphere, making it a top candidate for exploration.

Nasa’s $3.35billion (£2.48billion) Dragonfly mission to Saturn’s moon is set to explore the possibility of past or present water-based life, particularly in subsurface oceans and liquid reservoirs.

The mission just passed its critical design review – meaning engineers can begin building the helicopter-like robot ahead of its scheduled launch in July 2028.

Dragonfly, which was officially selected as a viable mission in 2019, is expected to reach Titan sometime in 2034.

‘Strange’ motion

In late May, researchers found that Titan’s hazy atmosphere wobbles like a gyroscope in line with its seasons, as opposed to spinning in line with its surface.

The “strange” motion was detected following analysis of archival infrared data gathered by Cassini probe.

“The behavior of Titan’s atmospheric tilt is very strange,” Dr. Lucy Wright, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, said at the time.

“Titan’s atmosphere appears to be acting like a gyroscope, stabilising itself in space.

“We think some event in the past may have knocked the atmosphere off its spin axis, causing it to wobble.

“Even more intriguingly, we’ve found that the size of this tilt changes with Titan’s seasons.”

But understanding how the atmosphere wobbles with the seasons is crucial for calculating the landing trajectory of Dragonfly.

The rotorcraft will be carried by Titan’s fast-moving winds as it descends through the atmosphere.

Winds on Titan’s upper atmosphere can be tempestuous, with speeds reaching up to 270mph (430kmph).

Near the surface, however, the winds are much weaker.

The tilt of the planet affects how Dragonfly’s payload – a suite of scientific instruments designed to search for alien life – will be carried through the air.

So research into the atmospheric motion can help engineers better predict where Dragonfly will touch down on the lunar surface.

Food for thought

There appears to be plenty of organic material on Titan to support alien lifeforms, according to a study published in The Planetary Science Journal last month.

Its lakes and its subsurface ocean believed to be 300miles deep, is thought to be filled with cold, oily methane and ethane – which is organic material.

“There has been this sense that because Titan has such abundant organics, there is no shortage of food sources that could sustain life,” Antonin Affholder, of the University of Arizona and lead author of the paper, said in a statement.

The world exceeds even Earth’s oil reserves.

However, scientists remain skeptical, and while Titan could harbour life, it’s likely only to be a small amount.

“We point out that not all of these organic molecules may constitute food sources, the ocean is really big,” added Affholder.

“And there’s limited exchange between the ocean and the surface, where all those organics are, so we argue for a more nuanced approach.”

Explosives hidden in animal carcasses used in new warfare tactic in Ukraine

Dead rabbits being stuffed with explosives
Footage shared on Telegram shows the pre-assembled explosive charge being stuffed inside carcasses

Explosives concealed in the carcasses of animals are being employed as a tactic by Russia in the war in Ukraine, it has been alleged.

Telegram channel Para Pax claimed this is one way Russian forces evade detection and blend into the environment to inflict maximum damage on the frontline.

Footage shows the pre-assembled explosive charge being stuffed inside the body of a rabbit then carefully concealed with fabric.

It is understood that the improvised explosive devices are then deployedvia drones for both area denial and targeted attacks.

Using animal carcasses complicates explosives detection by conventional methods, increasing the risk to Ukrainian soldiers operating in the area.

This method is employed to mine terrain as well as strike precise targets.

Drones have become increasingly important in detecting traps left by the enemy in Ukraine to detect explosives, but they are unlikely to detect the booby-trapped carcasses of animals.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there have been documented cases of Russian forces booby-trapping not only abandoned equipment but also the bodies of their own soldiers.

Such tactics are not entirely new.

The use of IEDs hidden in animal’s carcasses was also common among insurgent groups like Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the Taliban, and other militias who fought against the US and Nato.

They frequently hid explosives in dead animals such as dogs, donkeys, or goats, especially along roadways, footpaths, or near checkpoints.

Before the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban was also known to use animal-borne IEDs (ABIEDs).

These included live animals, like donkeys, which were fitted with bombs and directed toward targets.

In some cases, the animals were released to wander into sensitive areas, triggering a major blast.
