Wedding guest dressing has turned tacky thanks to celebs like Georgia Steel – boob-bursting dresses belong in Benidorm

Collage of three women in different dresses.

WEARING white as a wedding guest used to be a cardinal sin and the ultimate insult to the bride.

But nowadays there’s a far worse style crime.

Gone are tailored trouser suits, chic two-pieces and glamorous, ankle-skimming gowns.

Instead, you’re more likely to spot looks you would find on the strip in Benidorm.

Think bum-skimming Lycra mini-dresses, skimpy bra tops, or dresses with sky-high thigh slits and boob-baring cut-outs.

One of the things I love about a wedding — aside from dancing to Come On Eileen and drinking a headache-inducing amount of champers, — is getting dressed up.

I’m talking sophisticated dresses, stylish hats and fascinators and killer heels for the girls, and sharp suits for the blokes.

The novelty of getting spruced up to the nines makes the special day all that more exciting and memorable.

Passing judgement on others’ outfits while you wait for the bride to make her entrance (which, admit it, we all do) is a big part of it, too.

I’m out of the “going to a wedding every other weekend” age bracket now — and what a relief, because the looks that seem to be trending wouldn’t be out of place in the queue for an Oceana nightclub.

Across social media, scantily-clad twenty-somethings share their wedding outfits with pride — while I gawp, with prejudice.

A quick Google search for “wedding guest outfits” produces dozens of brands’ standalone pages dedicated solely to this category.

But as you scroll through the likes of Club L, Oh Polly and River Island, you’ll find that the dresses and gowns — yes, Gen Z wear full-on gowns now — are better suited to the Love Island finale than a wedding in your local country house hotel.

And, like most trends, we have celebrities to blame.

When Dani Dyer wed footballer Jarrod Bowen last week, guest and fellow Love Islander Georgia Steel was slated for wearing what looked like a revealing white dress to her pal’s big day.

After Georgia posted a snap on TikTok of the lace-trimmed Miss Circle number she wore, the trolls came out in force, bashing her for picking what was in fact a “soft beige” dress.

“Wearing white to a wedding?” questioned one, while another waded in with: “Way too bridal for a wedding.”

And Georgia isn’t alone. Two months ago, White Lotus actress Sydney Sweeney came under fire for the “inappropriate” dress she wore to her Anyone But You co-star Glenn Powell’s sister’s wedding.

She chose a cleavage-baring corset-style dress from V Chapman in a very pale blue.

Fans thought the colour was an issue.

Comments included: “That is not an appropriate shade of blue for a wedding” and “The number one [rule] of a wedding is don’t wear anything close to white.”

Personally, I take no issue with guests wearing white at a wedding. As long as they aren’t also wearing a long veil (cropped veils on fascinators are allowed), who cares?

Especially during summer, when every other dress on the high street is some shade of white.

No one at the wedding is going to mistake someone else as the bride. It’s the bride’s name on the invite and her kissing the groom — so no need for the unnecessary uproar.

However, what I would take issue with is the plunging neckline and lingerie-style basque of Sydney’s outfit and, in Georgia’s case, the fact her lacy dress is practically see-through.

Don’t get me wrong, Sydney is a knock-out, and if I looked like that, I’d be wearing sexy numbers, too — just not to a wedding.

As one person commented online: “Kinda tacky to wear to a wedding. C’mon Syds, you can do better.” And she can.

The woman is an ambassador for designer brand Miu Miu, for crying out loud. Raid something from their archives that’s less underwear-like and more sophisticated. But it’s not just Sydney. Kendall Jenner wore a heavily cut-out black gown to her pal’s wedding, which sent the internet into meltdown due to its slashed fabric that barely covered her nipples.

And her sister, Kylie, has also faced outfit-shaming from keyboard warriors.

Don’t get me wrong, Sydney is a knock-out, and if I looked like that, I’d be wearing sexy numbers, too — just not to a wedding

Clemmie

At Hailey and Justin Bieber’s wedding, fans accused her of trying to steal the bride’s limelight by wearing a gold, floor-sweeping gown with peek-a-boo cleavage and a hip-high slit.

On X, one critic wrote: “If someone tries to pull a Kylie Jenner move like this at my wedding . . . they will kindly be escorted out with a red wine stain down the front of their dress.”

Ouch!

But then Hailey wore a backless white dress to a friend’s big day in 2023, which broke all the so-called wedding rules for looking just like a bridal gown.

When it comes to these codes, they’re subjective and are dependent on the wedding location.

If you’re lucky enough to be a guest at a ceremony abroad in a hot country, sitting in a long-sleeve, high-neck, polyester dress at noon is going to give you heatstroke.

And wearing a tailored pencil midi dress to sit on a bale of hay in a field will make you stick out like a sore thumb. I get it. I’ve been there myself and it’s a minefield. But if in doubt, aim for a more demure style.

Don’t copy the under-boob and pelvis-flashing looks of young celebs — think more of the women who have nailed the guest brief.

Keep it classy

Cast your mind back to happier times when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got married.

Amal Clooney, in a yellow, capped-sleeve midi-dress by Stella McCartney, was crowned best-dressed guest in attendance. Bold, but without being in danger of over-shadowing the bride, it was perfect.

Another flawless guest at a royal wedding was Demi Moore.

She battled gale-force winds in a burgundy dress and matching veiled hat — again, by Stella McCartney — when Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank in 2018. And she looked incredible.

Cindy Crawford’s daughter, actress Kaia Gerber, also got it right when she wore a classy, long-sleeved dress from Reformation to a friend’s 2018 wedding in Miami, Florida.

At the time, the navy, slit-leg frock retailed for £180, proving that even supermodels with designer brands at their fingertips can look amazing in high street buys.

A big emerging trend on the high street this wedding season seems to be minimal frocks with slinky scarves, which are intended to be worn draped down your back, not wrapped around you like a winter woollen.

They create a sense of elegance without having to have your boobs and bum out.

So if you are heading to someone’s nuptials this summer, keep it classy, girls.

Underwear as outerwear and flesh-flashing cut-outs are for the weekend, not for a wedding.

I make £10,000 each summer renting my house to rich tourists – I live with my daughter in a caravan in mum’s garden

Collage of a house, a caravan interior, and a woman and child at the beach.

LIKE many mums, I’m already planning the summer holidays in Cornwall.

I’m budgeting carefully to make my money stretch as far as possible but unlike many of my mates, I’m not just watching the pennies this summer – I’m making them, too.

She and her daughter move into a 20-year-old caravan in her parents’ garden[/caption]

So as my daughter Mabel and I splashing about at Jubilee Pool in Penzance, watch a kids’ show at the Minack Theatre and wander around the Eden Project, we’ll be earning while we’re relaxing.

I’m renting our family home in Cornwall to tourists, so we can earn an extra £10k over the peak summer months.

To make it work, Mabel, 7, and I are swapping our house for a caravan at my parents’ farm in north Cornwall.

People tell me that I’m mad to give up our comfy home to live in a less-than-glam caravan for six weeks with a small child.

PRECIOUS TIME

But while they’re glued to laptops or forking out for childcare, I’ll be bringing in enough money to cut back my working hours and spend more precious time with my daughter.

I’d much rather give up my sofa and Wi-Fi than work flat-out all summer, feeling like I’m failing my boss and my child.

My daughter and I live in a standard three-bedroom house at the edge of Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsula.

It’s not in one of the posh tourist hotspots like St Mawes or Portloe, where the seafront rentals go for between £4k and £8k a week.

But it’s definitely close enough to the sea to tempt holidaymakers looking for a more affordable base.

A 10-minute drive gets you to the fairytale-like Caerhays Castle or the long stretch of sand at Carne Beach and Pendower.

A woman and a girl smiling at the beach.
Rebecca and her daughter have planned lots of day trips for the holidays
Rebecca Tidy

Go a little further, around 20 minutes, and you’ve got the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Mevagissey’s working harbour and quaint shops.

I’ve teamed up with a friend who owns several holiday cottages nearby. Her properties get snapped up early, mostly by returning guests, so when someone misses out, she recommends my house.

Holiday costs in Cornwall have shot up since lockdown, and many people are pleased to find somewhere peaceful for well under half the price of a typical seafront stay.

Getting the house up to scratch for paying guests is the most labour-intensive bit.

I charge £2,000 per week and pay my friend a 10 percent commission, which works out at around £200 a week.

In return, I get lovely, respectful guests and none of the marketing and admin stress.

Our bookings for this summer are confirmed, and Mabel and I will be making the most of the great outdoors by July.

Anyone can rent their property out – you just need to ensure you have fire doors fitted and check the terms of your house insurance and mortgage.

In London and some other places, you’re limited to a maximum of 90 days rental.

Most people I speak to assume that the hardest part is living in a caravan. But honestly, getting the house up to scratch for paying guests is the most labour-intensive bit. It’s no small task, so I do odd jobs here and there.

Though it’s only May, I’m already repainting scuffed walls and doors, booked a plumber to replace the shower, and filled the flower beds with marigolds and petunias.

In all, I’ll spend around £1,000 on repairs that probably need doing anyway.

It’s the thought of guests arriving that motivates me to get them done, instead of endlessly putting them off.

As for our own summer living quarters, the 20-year-old caravan isn’t exactly boutique.

Rebecca first rented out her house in 2011 when she was a student
Rebecca Tidy

It’s been sitting, mostly disused, between an outhouse and polytunnel at the bottom of my parents’ garden for years. But it’s got everything you need for an outdoorsy summer.

There’s electricity, a toilet and sink in the outhouse. And I’ve kitted it out with a kettle, microwave, a second-hand fridge-freezer and a cheap double electric hob.

We’re bringing bunting, solar-powered fairy lights, an inflatable paddling pool and a fire pit for marshmallow toasting.

HOLIDAY HACK

I love to give the place a proper holiday vibe, even if there’s no fancy hot-tub or Instagrammable outdoor pizza oven.

We’ll venture into my parents’ house to make the most of the shower and bath, but even though mum asked us to live with them for the holidays, our different approaches to parenting make this nearly impossible.

A caravan seems like a healthy compromise, as we all get our own space, yet they will be close by on the farm.

Plus, my mum is happy to help with Mabel a couple of days a week, so I can keep my freelance business going.

Every Saturday, I’ll make the one-hour drive back to the house to clean, wash the sheets and towels and tackle any urgent maintenance issues.

Last year, I took a month off work and also paid off a chunk off the mortgage with the extra cash.

I first tried this money-making trick back in 2011, when I was a grad student in Devon living on a £14k a year grant.

Each summer, I’d rent out my waterfront flat for up to a week at a time, while working at residential summer schools and sleeping in student halls.

Instead of spending the extra money, I saved it up and eventually used it to put down a deposit on a second property in Cornwall.

But now I’m a single parent and mortgage interest rates are high, I’ve found myself relying on this holiday hack for the last few summers.

Last year, I took a month off work and also paid off a chunk off the mortgage with the extra cash.

It’s not always smooth sailing as caravan life does have its challenges, especially when it rains.

Come September, we’ll be grateful not to dash outside to use the loo in a downpour.

I would love to put the cash towards a summer spent abroad one day, in a place with guaranteed sunshine.

For now, a rustic British summer with my little one will do just fine.

I’ve found the perfect subscription gift for difficult dads this Father’s Day – it’s FREE for a month

A hand holding a phone displaying Audible's new releases, next to a Father's Day card.

FATHER’S Day is fast approaching, but dads aren’t always the easiest to buy for.

But I’ve found the perfect solution: a 30-day free trial of Audible, with plans starting at just £5.99 a month after.

This is the ideal gift for Father’s Day[/caption]

Audible, 30-day free trial (renews from £5.99/month)

If your dad is anything like mine, finding the right gift can feel like a bit of a mission.

Whenever I ask him what he’d like, I get the same familiar, “I don’t need anything,” response.

It’s one of those answers that’s both endearing and maddening, making the whole gift-giving process feel more complicated.

This year, though, I think I’ve found the perfect solution in Amazon’s Audible subscription.

Having used Audible myself for the better part of a year, I can confidently say it’s an ideal gift for dads who are impossible to shop for.

And with Father’s Day just around the corner on June 15th, it’s what I’ll be gifting my dad this year.

It’s something he wouldn’t think to buy for himself, and honestly, it beats yet another “Best Dad” mug or novelty socks by a mile.

The standard Audible subscription starts with a 30-day free trial and includes one audiobook per month, all for just £5.99 after the trial ends.

If you’re feeling generous or just want to make a bigger impression, the premium plan is worth considering.

With a premium subscription, your dad receives one credit each month to select any audiobook he wants, which he can keep even after the membership ends.

Plus, there’s unlimited access to over 10,000 additional titles and Audible Originals through the Plus Catalogue.

That’s the option I’m going with, because it feels like a thoughtful gift, even if you’re buying at the twelfth hour.

It gives him a whole month to explore Audible’s library, while giving me a chance to give a gift that feels more personal.

If your dad’s new to audiobooks and not sure where to start, Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey is a great shout, with a mix of stories, reflections, and odd bits of wisdom.

My own dad is a huge footie fan, with a small collection of football memoirs.

There are loads of great ones on Audible, including Alex Ferguson’s leadership lessons or Steven Gerrard’s stories from the pitch.

But whether he’s more into fiction or thrillers, the bestseller section is full of options that’ll keep him entertained.

All in all, Audible is a solid, no-fuss gift that shows you’ve thought about what he’d enjoy and will get you in his good books.

Fresh blow for Vogue and Spencer Matthews as they’re forced to slash £1.3 MILLION off their posh South London flat

VOGUE Williams and Spencer Matthews have been forced to slash the price of their luxury South London flat by £1.3million.

The TV star couple have been hit with the fresh blow after failing to sell the property in more than a year.

Vogue and Spencer had first listed the apartment for £5.25million after deciding to say goodbye to the city for a new life in Dublin.

But with it still on the market earlier this year, they dropped the asking price to £4.7million.

The swish four-bedroom property, which has a concierge and private gym, is now listed on property website Rightmove for £3,950,000.

The price reduction comes despite Vogue, 39, and 36-year-old Spencer‘s home having extensive features.

There are two huge reception rooms, a private roof garden/terrace, a bar and in-house cinema/media room.

The primary bedroom comes with an en-suite, with two more luxury bathrooms elsewhere in the property.

Vogue and Spencer had first put their home on the market in early 2024 with the view to snapping up a bigger property in Ireland for their three children – Theodore, Gigi and Otto – to grow up in.

Hailing from Ireland herself, Vogue has always had a house there and the couple also own a home in Jersey.

During their reality TV show, Spencer, Vogue and Baby Too, Vogue didn’t hide her desire to raise her family back on the green isle.

She also told Mail Online in 2023 how she had put their Irish property up for sale as they had found their dream home in Howth, Dublin.

Vogue said at the time: “It’s where I grew up, it’s the only place I’d want to live in Dublin, it’s by the sea, and when you’re working all the time in London, it’s nice to go back there.

“It’s the kind of place that our family can just be in forever.

“I suppose you’ll always feel like that but it’s such a beautiful house, it’s just slightly small as our kids are getting bigger, and our family is kind of expanding.”

Vogue and Spencer’s property plight comes after they were forced to deny repeated rumours that their marriage was in trouble.

The couple tied the knot seven years ago and Vogue was left furious after the whispers failed to go away.

Setting the record straight in March, she fumed: “It’s with great sadness that I have to let you know that Spen and I are NOT breaking up!

“I usually avoid addressing baseless and cruel rumours but this just keeps coming up.”

Vogue posted her fiery rant alongside a carousel of images showing herself and Spencer looking seriously loved up.

She went on to insist that rumours of a marriage breakdown were “absolutely not true”, adding: “More importantly I don’t want my children hearing these lies in the playground.”

Vogue concluded: “We’re not sure what the angle is or where it’s coming from but the whole thing feels very strange and mean.

“We’re very happily married and in love and I hope posting the truth on my own platform might make it stop.”

Fancy winning over £250 worth of SPF goodies from Hello Sunday? Here’s how

Female holding pink tube, next to three green products in different shapes
Winning this competition is basically SPF for life – or at least a very long time. (Picture: Metro/Getty/Hello Sunday)

Metro journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more

Hey, you… yes you! How would you like to win over £250 worth of gorgeous Hello Sunday treats?

Forget the thick, greasy sunscreens of the past, this UK-based brand is all about lightweight, skin-loving formulas that slot into your routine without any fuss. The packaging is cute, the names are playful (like ‘The One That’s a Serum’), and the products do more than just protect you from the sun – they also shield your skin from pollution and blue light.

How good is that?

Better yet, they’re vegan, cruelty-free, and packed with good-for-you ingredients like hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.

Basically, they’ve taken all the boring bits out of SPF and made it something you’ll actually want to wear every day – which, we hate to remind you, but you should be doing all year round too.

Now we’ve teamed up with Hello Sunday to give one of you over £250 worth of goodies, including ‘The One That’s A Serum’ (worth £23), and ‘The Mineral One SPF 50’ (worth £26).

Green and white bottle with pippette at the top
Hydrating and protecting? Count us in. (Picture: Metro/Hello Sunday)

The ultra-light, glow-giving formula that ‘The Mineral One SPF’ has is basically skincare’s answer to a triple-shot oat latte: hydrating, energising, and totally addictive. It glides on like a dream (no chalky cast in sight), leaving your skin dewy, calm, and ready to face the day.

Packed with antioxidant-rich Kukui Oil and vitamin E, it’s like a mini shield for your face – fighting off free radicals, smoothing fine lines, and helping to fade dark spots while you get on with your life. And thanks to hyaluronic acid, your skin stays plump and juicy whether it’s heatwave season or mid-winter chill.

Fragrance-free, featherlight, and designed for everyday wear, this is SPF that works hard without showing off. Just like you.

Someone called ‘PinkLady’ from Belfast hailed it ‘perfection for sensitive rosacea skin’, and went on to add: ‘This is perfect for easily dehydrated, sensitive rosacea-prone skin that reacts to most chemical sunscreens. It’s very emollient, which is not pleasant at first, but dries to a nice satin finish. Minimal white cast. I’m also acne prone, and this caused no breakouts.’

Martha followed suit and also mentioned that it was a ‘great option for deeper skin tones’, and went on to say: ‘For reference I’m a Fitzpatrick 6. I use 1 pipette full (1/2 suggested amount) with 1 finger of mineral sunscreen (1/2 recommended amount) to get full factor 50 coverage. Mineral sunscreens do have a white tint as they are white pigments but going it this way I do not get a white cast. I have told all my black friends about this as white cast is our regular struggle. This has saved me so much time with not having to apply makeup to make a mineral sunscreen work for me.’

Well this product sounds like something we need ASAP. (Picture: Metro/Hello Sunday)

If you’re looking for a standout product, try ‘The One That’s a Serum SPF 50’. This featherlight SPF 50 serum is the kind of overachiever we love – moisturiser, sunscreen, and glow-booster all rolled into one sleek little bottle.

It’s packed with antioxidants, brightening vitamin C, and plumping hyaluronic acid, so your skin gets a hit of hydration, protection, and radiance in one go.

No white cast, or greasy finish either – just smooth, dewy skin that looks like it’s had eight hours of sleep and a green juice. It sinks in like a serum (because it is one) and works hard behind the scenes to fend off UV rays, pollution, and those pesky early signs of ageing.

Basically, it’s your skincare routine—streamlined, simplified, and seriously effective. All-year-round glow? Sorted.

Below you’ll find the list of all the products you can win.

Ange Postecoglou warned by former Tottenham star over Daniel Levy silence

Former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon believes Spurs’ silence on Ange Postecoglou’s future indicates that the club are planning to sack the 59-year-old this summer.

Postecoglou guided Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final last month.

However, the Australian’s future remains in doubt following Spurs’ woeful Premier League campaign which saw them finish 17th in the table with 22 defeats.

During Spurs’ Europa League trophy parade, Postecoglou indicated that he would be staying on as manager by telling supporters: ‘All the best television series… season three is better than season two.’

However, Lennon feels Spurs’ lack of clarification over Postecoglou’s future suggests a change of manager could happen.

Asked if Spurs need to clarify Postecoglou’s position, Lennon told talkSPORT: ‘One-hundred per cent, and that’s for everyone, everyone to do with the football club and for the players to know where they’re going.

‘And also you’ve seen the other clubs now they’re already spending early, so you need to get in the market.

‘Spurs know they need players, they’ve just got Champions League football, and that’s squad’s not strong enough, it’s not good enough, and the manager needs to be part of that process, so there does need to be clarification soon and fast to whether he’s going to be staying or not.

‘This awkward silence, I don’t know if it’s alarm bells, I don’t like it, I don’t think it looks good for Ange, in my opinion.’

Asked if he would support Spurs’ decision to sack Postecoglou, Lennon replied: ‘It’s a tough one for me. A lot of people have been asking me and I’ve been scratching my head about this one.

‘Because the thing I always take into account is how do I reckon the players are still playing for him, are the players still behind the manager? I do believe that they are.

‘Normally when a manager is getting sacked or he has lost the dressing room you can see that, you can see the way the team’s playing, you can see it in their interviews after.

‘But every player I’ve seen is so buzzing about Ange and they’ve always got so much good to say about him.

‘It’s a difficult one, I wouldn’t be surprised if they got rid of Ange, I wouldn’t be surprised.’

Lennon also insists Spurs will be making a mistake if they keep delaying a decision over Postecoglou and their summer transfer plans.

‘For me, if I was a manager and even for the players, it’s so much better to get the players in early,’ the former England winger said.

‘Get them in that group in pre-season, going on pre-season trips, getting them bonding, especially if they’re coming from different leagues, just to get them settled, their families settled, it’s vital.

‘For me, Spurs’ squad at the minute is not good enough to play Champions League and to play three games a week at the highest level and then to be pushing up the league where they belong. They need to make investments and make them fast.’
