Arsenal are preparing an improved bid for Viktor Gyokeres but Manchester United have also launched a rival offer for the Sporting CP striker, according to reports in Portugal.

Earlier this week, Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with his counterpart at Sporting, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for the Sweden international.

However, Sporting turned down Arsenal’s initial proposal worth an initial €55 million (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons.

Sporting have made it clear that they are willing to sell Gyokeres for less than his €100m (£85.1m) release clause and are understood to be holding out for a fee closer to €80m (£68.1m).

According to Maisfutebol, Arsenal are ready to submit an improved bid to Sporting with a package worth €70m (£59.6m) including bonuses.

The report claims that Sporting are prepared to hold another round of negotiations with Arsenal, while there is a ‘growing optimism’ in Gyokeres’ camp that a deal can be agreed between the two clubs.

It’s also claimed that United remain in the race for Gyokeres and have made it clear to Sporting that they are willing to pay €60m (£51.1m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons.

However, United are unable to offer Gyokeres the prospect of playing in Europe next season and it’s reported that Ruben Amorim’s side have ‘encountered obstacles’ in their direct talks with the striker, who finished the season with 54 goals in 52 games.

Who’s the best choice for Arsenal up front? 🤔 The Gunners are reportedly in talks with Viktor Gyökeres AND Benjamin Šeško, and both have different qualities that could be the missing piece to Arteta’s puzzle. Meanwhile, Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas, hit out at Gyokeres and his agent on Wednesday over suggestions that a transfer fee had been agreed ahead of the summer transfer window.

‘It was agreed that Sporting would not demand the release clause at the end of the following season, especially because he was going to be 27,’ Varandas said.

‘Then, we knew Viktor’s dream of going to a club where he could fight for the Champions League and we have common sense. We guaranteed that we would not demand €100 million.

‘In that meeting, the agent wanted to anchor the departure to a value, he spoke of €60 million, €70 million… And I said “there’s no point in setting a value because I don’t know what will happen here in a year, if he gets injured, if he has a disappointing season.

‘There’s no point in setting a value, I don’t know if it will be €40m, €60m or €80m. What I can guarantee is that I will not demand €100 million.

‘From then on, I never spoke to the agent again, I never spoke to the player about departures and values.

‘Ten months have passed and I see the agent in the press spouting information here and there, but Sporting has common sense, it keeps its word.

‘One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don’t work with me. I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m plus €10m because I never promised him that.

‘This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres, neither today nor last season.’

On Thursday night, Gyokeres appeared to hit back at those claims in a post on Instagram which read: ‘There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.’

Israel launched a ‘pre-emptive’ strike on Iran in the early hours of Friday morning and declared a ‘state of emergency’ across the country over fears of retaliation.

Several explosions were seen in Iran’s capital Tehran, while Israel has confirmed that attacks, which are part of an operation called ‘Rising Lion’, also took place on other ‘nuclear targets’ across Iran.

In his address to the nation, Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, suggested that more strikes against Iran will take place in the coming days.

‘This operation will continue as long as necessary until we complete the mission – to repel the threat of destruction hanging over our heads,’ Netanyahu said.

‘Iran still has significant capabilities to harm us – and we have prepared for that as well.’

Why has Israel attacked Iran?

Netanyahu made it clear in his address on Friday morning that Israel’s attack is in response to the nuclear threat posed by Iran.

‘In recent years Iran has produced enough highly enriched uranium for nine atom bombs,’ Netanyahu said.

‘In recent months, Iran has taken steps that it has never taken before steps to weaponise this enriched uranium and if not stopped Iran could produce a nuclear weapon in a very short time.

‘It could be a year, it could be within a few months, less than a year. This is a clear and present danger to Israel’s very survival.’

On Thursday, United States president Donald Trump warned that an Israeli strike on Iran ‘could very well happen’ unless Iran agreed to halt production of material for an atomic bomb.

Emergency alert sent to Israeli citizens

Sirens could be heard across Israel to alert citizens of the attack on Friday morning.

A message was also sent to every mobile phone in Israel which read: ‘Most severe emergency alert. Follow Home Front Command instructions. Due to preparation for a significant threat, immediately follow Home Front Command instructions being distributed at this moment across all media channels.’

Israel is now in a state of emergency with schools and businesses closing, with the exception of ‘essential activity’.

The nation’s airspace is also closed and all civilian flights to the country have been cancelled.

United States denies involvement in Israeli strike

The United States denied any involvement in Israel’s plan to strike Iran.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio said: ‘Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We have no involvement in the strikes against Iran, and our top priority is to protect American forces in the region.

‘Israel informed us that they believe this action is necessary for self-defence. President Trump and the administration have taken all necessary steps to protect our forces, and we maintain close contact with our partners in the region.

‘Let me be clear – Iran should avoid harming US interests or our people.’

However, the Israel Defense Forces has claimed that they were in ‘full communication with the US during the attacks.

‘Israeli Air Force jets have begun striking throughout Iran,’ the IDF said.

‘We are in full communication with the Americans and maintaining good cooperation with them. We are striking now due to Iran’s progress and rapid advancement in recent months in their nuclear weapons program – they are just days away, given a decision, from having enough fissile material for 15 nuclear bombs.

‘In recent months, the Iranians have conducted secret tests for assembling nuclear weapons. Iran has thousands of ballistic missiles with plans to triple that number in the coming year – this already poses an existential threat to Israel, even without nuclear weapons, which we will attack.’

Iceland to close two major stores starting in DAYS

SUPERMARKET chain Iceland is closing two stores starting in days as shoppers share their devastation.

The frozen food specialist is shutting a location in Margate on the Kent coast on June 21.

Meanwhile, a further branch will close for good in Inverness, Scotland, on July 12.

The retailer said in a statement that staff at both sites have been offered roles at surrounding stores “where possible”.

But news of the closures has still been met with heartbreak from locals and shoppers.

One, posting on Facebook about the Margate closure, said: “Margate is losing everything bit by bit.”

Another added: “Can the town centre get any worse with empty buildings.”

Commenting on the Inverness branch shutting, one shopper said: “Very sad to hear this news.”

Another chipped in: “I’m so gutted.”

The closure of the Inverness branch means there will no longer be any Iceland stores in the Scottish city.

The nearest Iceland store will be in Aberdeen while there is a Food Warehouse, run by Iceland, in Inverness’s Telford Street.

It’s not the first store closure made by Iceland in the past few months.

It pulled down the shutters permanently on its site in Welling at the start of the year.

A site in Borehamwood and another in Exeter permanently shut around the same time.

The latest closures means Iceland has shut more than 20 stores since the start of 2023.

It’s worth bearing in mind retailers often shut branches in underperforming areas and open them where they think they’ll get more footfall and sales.

For example, it’s not all bad new for Iceland as in 2024 it announced plans to open more of its Food Warehouse format stores across the UK.

Food Warehouse stores, run by the Iceland Foods Group, are generally larger than Iceland shops and usually found in retail parks.

OTHER RETAIL CLOSURES

The retail sector has struggled in recent years due to the onset of online shopping and lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic.

Higher inflation since 2022 has also hit shoppers’ budgets while businesses have struggled with higher wage, tax and energy costs.

The Centre for Retail Research has described the sector as going through a “permacrisis” since the 2008 financial crash.

Figures from the Centre also show 34 retail companies operating multiple stores stopped trading in 2024, leading to the closure of 7,537 shops.

This was the highest number of stores affected in a calendar year since the Centre started collecting this data in 2007.

On top of these more than 7,500 stores, over 11,000 independent shops closed in 2024.

This is in addition to almost 7,800 independent stores that closed in 2023.

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025

The British Retail Consortium predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

Research by the British Chambers of Commerce showed that more than half of companies planned to raise prices by early April.

A survey of more than 4,800 firms also found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024.

Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.

Israel launches operation ‘Rising Lion’ on Iran as explosions rock Tehran & emergency declared over retaliation fears

ISRAEL has launched strikes against Iran in a dramatic escalation risking all-out war in the Middle East.

Explosions rung out and plumes of smoke rose above the capital Tehran after a volley of “preemptive strikes” as part of Operation Rising Lion.

Israel claims the attack targeted nuclear and military sites[/caption]

The attack comes after tensions flared following Iran’s advancing nuclear programme, with Donald Trump warning of a “massive conflict” between the enemy nations.

Iran has been stockpiling uranium and it is feared they are close to having enough weapons-grade fusion material for as many as 15 nuclear bombs.

The US has already declared it had no involvement in the strikes, which Israel claimed targeted nuclear and military sites.

Fearing a reprisal, Israel has already declared a “special state of emergency”, closing schools and public gatherings and sounding air-raid sirens.

Defence Minister Israel Katz said: “Following the State of Israel’s preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future.”

The orders have been imposed across the entire state, with emergency messages sent to mobile phones ordering Israelis to stay close to shelters and limit movement in open areas.

Speaking after the blitz, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was a “decisive moment in Israel’s history”.

On Thursday, the UN’s nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency censured Iran for failing to work with its inspectors.

Iran’s nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, slammed the resolution as “extremist” and blamed Israeli influence.

Trump, whose administration is in talks with Iran in a bid to hammer out a deal over its nuclear programme, said he had urged ally Israel to hold off as he stressed his commitment to a diplomatic solution.

“I don’t want to say imminent, but it looks like it’s something that could very well happen,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked if an Israeli attack loomed.

Trump said he believed a “pretty good” deal on Iran’s nuclear program was “fairly close,” but said that an Israeli attack on its arch foe could wreck the chances of an agreement.

The US has already pulled some diplomats from Tehran and offered evacuations for troops and families stationed in the Middle East.

Iran's breaching nuclear rules

IRAN has been declared as in breach of its nuclear rules for the first time in two decades.

The UN’s atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, passed a resolution on Wednesday condemning Tehran’s “lack of co-operation”.

It is the culmination of several stand-offs between the Vienna-based IAEA and Iran since Trump pulled the US out of a nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers in 2018 during his first term, after which that accord unravelled.

Tehran said it “has no choice but to respond to this political resolution”, and said it would launch a new enrichment site “in a secure location”.

The state said: “Other measures are also being planned and will be announced subsequently.”

An IAEA official said Iran had given no further details such as the location of the site.

It comes as US and Iranian officials are due to hold a sixth round of talks on Tehran’s accelerating uranium enrichment programme in Oman on Sunday.

The Trump administration has been trying to secure a deal with Tehran aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear programme.

Donald Trump is said to be in advanced talks with Iran over a preliminary agreement that could include provisions on uranium enrichment – terms Israel finds unacceptable.
