Actor from Netflix’s The Crown is convicted FRAUDSTER who stole £20k, lied about being military hero & wore fake medals

AN actor who appeared in The Crown has been accused of stolen valour after posing as an officer in the Army reserves.

James Yeates, 42, even attended an Honourable Artillery Company dinner in full Intelligence Corps mess dress.

Veterans launched an investigation after a tip off[/caption]

Pictures showed him wearing three medals – the Queen’s Diamond, Platinum Jubilee and King’s Coronation medals – at the swanky do.

Other online photos saw him posing in Intelligence Corps fatigues.

But the convicted fraudster was exposed after veterans launched an investigation following a tip-off.

In reality, the actor had never served a day of his life in the army.

Instead, he had purchased the medals on eBay.

In an online profile he boasted: “I’m a fully trained, enthusiastic and versatile actor, l’m also a current serving officer in the British armed forces (reserves).”

When The Sun confronted him he hastily amended the bio to read: “I’m a fully trained, enthusiastic and versatile actor.”

On another site, Backstage, he wrote: “Alongside being a professionally trained and working actor, I am also a current serving officer in the British Armed Forces (reserves).”

His email auto-signature also read: “Major James Yeates, Co-Founder, Military and Aviation Advisors.”

But veterans say there is no record of him ever serving in the reserves and no mention of him in the London Gazette which lists every officers’ commissions.

Extra Yeates, who posted photographs of himself on the set of the Crown in 2018 and 2019, suggested the picture of him at the mess dinner was from a film set.

But furious guests who also attended in March 2024 said an internal investigation was now underway to find out who invited him and whether he was vetted.

Yeates also claimed his firm, Military and Aviation Advisors, had worked on the film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but there is no record showing their involvement.

The Walter Mitty Hunters Club, who led the investigation, is now calling for a new law, the Stolen Valour Act, to make it a criminal offence.

A spokesman said: “The sole reason we exist is because of people like Yeates.

“If there were ever a strong reason for a stolen valour act, this is a prime example.

“Yeates clearly has a well documented history for dishonesty, going by his past endeavours, and the undeniable evidence trail.

“But to impersonate a serving Major in the Intelligence Corps, regular or reserve.

“Wearing the uniform, rank, and medals, which Yeates has not earned, and taking in genuine veterans, and those still serving, when he had never even stepped foot in a training establishment or served one day in the armed forces is a step too far.

“His deliberate actions are disrespectful to the service community and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service to the crown.”

James has run several failed businesses[/caption]

Yeates, of Dorking, Surrey, escaped jail in 2006 after he took more than £20,000 from customers’ bank accounts after his business collapsed.

He blew £22,650 within three days and later admitted using criminal property and transferring criminal property at Guildford Crown Court.

A previous indictment of 30 counts relating to theft was left on file.

He was later jailed for 12 months in May 2015 for fraud after spending £7,700 on a credit card that did not belong to him.

He bought first class flights to Los Angeles to shoot a video which he hoped would encourage talent to join his YouTube network Jey Management.

Last night, Yeates told The Sun: “Some comments I’ve made in the past may have been misunderstood or taken out of context.

“My focus has always been on working professionally and in good faith. “

He added: “At no point have I intentionally misled anyone, nor have I attempted to benefit professionally from any misrepresentation.”

UK city reveals plans for new trams as part of £800million transport upgrade – after they were scrapped 84 years ago

A TRAM line could be on the cards after planned changes to key roads in the city centre are set to create an “unbroken” corridor — a crucial step towards building a future mass transit network.

In Bristol, the proposed route would run from the Long Ashton park and ride in the south-west, through the city centre, and along the M32 to the north-east, largely separated from other traffic.

Transport leaders say it’s a strong contender for the first phase of a tram or rapid bus line[/caption]

This change will help the city tackle its housing crisis and sustain the vitality of the central area[/caption]

Transport leaders say it’s a strong contender for the first phase of a tram or rapid bus line.

Over the next two years, significant roadworks will take place at several central hotspots including Bedminster Bridges roundabout, Redcliffe roundabout, Union Street, the Haymarket, and Bond Street.

These upgrades will benefit the existing Metrobus M2 and set the groundwork for a future tram or rapid bus route.

Transport officials at Bristol City Council say this new “red route” could form the spine of a tram network.

Speaking to councillors on the transport policy committee, Green Cllr Emma Edwards said: “This route in future could potentially turn into a mass rapid transit route, whatever that might mean: more buses or maybe other modes as well.

“We’re trying to solve a problem for the future by creating an unbroken route that could turn into mass transit.

“We’re trying to think about the long term.”

While the exact form of the network is still under discussion, trams and bus rapid transit are the main options being explored.

The idea of a mass transit system for Bristol has been debated for decades.

Former mayor Marvin Rees had proposed a partially underground system, but the spiralling cost halted progress. In 2023, former West of England Mayor Dan Norris vetoed the underground element entirely, calling it “unrealistic”.

Since then, the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has continued to explore alternative solutions — without agreeing on whether a tram or bus system is best.

Labour’s Helen Godwin, the newly elected metro mayor, has yet to commit to a specific plan.

Meanwhile, Bristol City Council is pushing forward with the groundwork.

Adam Crowther, head of city transport, said: “Whether mass transit there ends up as a bus or a tram, either way it needs to be fully segregated from traffic, otherwise you get stuck and that’s when they become unreliable and therefore people don’t want to use them.

“So it’s about providing that full segregation.”

He acknowledged that new bus lanes on Bond Street will worsen car traffic in the short term.

Bristol City Centre Transport Changes Bristol city centre is set to change in the coming years, with major new housing developments and leisure and retail facilities planned[/caption]

But councillors hope the changes will encourage more people to leave their cars at home in favour of public transport or cycling, reducing congestion in the long run.

Labour Cllr Tim Rippington added: “One bus carrying 50 passengers really should be given priority, in my opinion, over 25 cars queuing up.

“I don’t see a problem with stopping the traffic in order to allow a bus to pass by. It’s all designed to deliver this red route.

“The worst thing that could happen is that we deliver all the infrastructure and then the lanes stay empty and we don’t deliver the mass transit route until 10 years later.

“I’m not even sure that the new metro mayor is aware that this route is our plan.”

Redcliffe roundabout changes will also enable a potential orbital bus loop around the city centre, initially running anti-clockwise.

Left turns are easier to implement than right turns, but funding remains uncertain.

Franchising may be required if commercial bus companies are unwilling to take it on.

The full red route begins at Long Ashton park and ride, travels along a bus-only road to Cumberland Road, and then through the newly controlled Bedminster Bridges junction.

Redcliff Street will become bus-only, and a bus gate at Bristol Bridge already blocks general traffic.

From there, it heads through Union Street and past Primark at the Haymarket.

Further bus lanes are proposed along the M32, with a new park and ride to be built, though the location is still being debated.

In the long term, the motorway could be downgraded to an A-road to accommodate tram or bus stops.

WECA is currently developing an outline business case to assess the best way forward.

Construction, however, is unlikely to begin before the 2030s.

Bloodcurdling moment ruthless soldier cocks his gun & presses it against woman’s temple during restaurant brawl

THIS is the bone-chilling moment a ruthless cop pins a woman to the ground and holds a loaded gun right up against her temple.

The shocking scene happened as tourists brawled outside a Chinese restaurant in Russia.

Officers had been called to reports of a fight in Khabarovsk[/caption]

Russian National Guard officers were called out to reports of a scrap between tourists on May 31.

The fight had spilled out into the streets of the Khabarovsk – in the country’s far east.

A bystander caught the cops’ intervention on their phone, but it soon escalated into a bloodcurdling scene.

The clip begins with burly officers confronting the brawling tourists as they try to bring order to the streets.

But the crowds aren’t having it, and make an attempt to scrap with the cops.

As the outnumbered officers work to bring the situation under control, a woman suddenly strikes one of the the cops from behind.

She slaps him hard on his ear before taking a step back.

But instead of attempting to restrain the woman by hand, the enraged officer suddenly pulls his gun on her.

The startled woman falls backwards onto the stairs as the cop moves in, pinning her to the ground.

He plants the barrel of his weapon onto her temple for a nerve-shredding split second.

But after a moment, he holsters his weapon while continuing to restrain the woman on the steps.

He then takes handcuffs from a fellow officer as he hauls her away from the scene.

By this point the fight had mostly quietened down, with a few onlookers nervously watching the cops leave.

They barge their way through a few tourists still standing there as they take the woman away for questioning.

According to the Russian state news agency TASS, the cop was later treated in hospital for a burst eardrum.

A Russian Federation Investigative Committee statement said: “A criminal case has been opened for the use of violence against a government official in the performance of his official duties.”

Any offenders could face up to 10 years in jail if they are convicted.

Two other suspects are also reported to have been detained.

I had headaches my whole life before a brain tumour was found – a change in my symptoms finally led to a diagnosis

NIAMH Rose Mulheron had experienced headaches since she was a child.

It wasn’t until years later, when other symptoms she initially mistook for flu appeared, that her brain tumour was discovered.

She’d experienced headaches since she was a child[/caption]

The 26-year-old’s headaches were “never taken seriously” and were brushed off as school stress or puberty when she went to see her doctor.

A few weeks before her diagnosis, at the age of 14, Niamh suffered with extreme exhaustion and would sleep for more than 12 hours a day – putting the symptom down to flu.

But when she woke up blind two weeks later, she knew something wasn’t right and she rushed to Western Infirmary Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, where a CT scan revealed she had a mass on her brain.

She then had an emergency surgery at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to remove the tumour, followed by a biopsy, which revealed she had a benign ganglioglioma – a rare brain tumour.

Since having the tumour removed, Niamh has been left with limited peripheral vision – which she said is a constant reminder of her diagnosis but she refuses to let it hold her back.

Niamh, a child care practitioner, from Glasgow, Scotland, said: “After I was diagnosed, we found out that the tumour was pressing on my optic nerve, which is why I went blind before my diagnosis.

“That caused a lot of damage to my eyes, I have no peripheral vision at all.

“That is why I have to wear glasses, but they don’t really help because of the damage the tumour has caused.

“It has affected me a lot, it is something that reminds me of everything that happened.

“As I have no peripheral vision at all, I am constantly on edge because I can’t see properly.

In the weeks leading up to her diagnosis, alongside extreme tiredness, Niamh began vomiting while trying to eat food, and also put this down to the flu.

Niamh said: “I started having headaches for years before I was diagnosed with a tumour.

“It was a day-to-day occurrence that I had, a couple of weeks before my diagnosis, I was sleeping constantly.

“The headaches started to intensify, I would eat and be sick when I was digesting food – I thought I had caught a bug.”

‘It felt like my whole world and life was crumbling’

In February 2013, Niamh went to bed and woke up the next day with blurred vision, so her mum, Christine, 55, took her to the GP, who recommended she go to A&E.

When she got there, Niamh had a CT scan which revealed a mass on the brain and she was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for emergency surgery to remove the tumour.

Niamh said: “Looking back on when I first got diagnosed, I honestly felt like my whole world and life was crumbling.

“Although I was only 14, my mind went into overdrive at all the possible outcomes I could be facing, and that stuck with me for years.

“It was years later when I did actually realise what had happened to me, and that was pretty difficult, because it felt that I had to live it all over again each time I was coming to terms with it properly.”

The emergency surgery was successful, and doctors were able to remove all the tumour – which was found to be bengin – and Niamh was told she didn’t need chemo or radiotherapy.

She underwent three surgeries to remove the brain tumour, and now gets scanned once a year[/caption]

The biopsy revealed that Niamh had a ganglioglioma – a rare brain tumour composed of both neuronal and glial cells.

Niamh then had two further surgeries one to remove a bone flap when she got an infection and another to remove a second tumour that started growing in her brain.

Niamh said: “Luckily for me, after those three surgeries, I was finished.

“I didn’t need chemotherapy or radiotherapy. At the time, I would go for MRI scans every three months for a year, and now I get a scan once a year.

“I feel so much anxiety when I have a scan coming up, even going into the MRI machine, I feel really anxious thinking they might pick something up again.”

The most common symptoms of a brain tumour

More than 12,000 Brits are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour every year — of which around half are cancerous — with 5,300 losing their lives.

The disease is the most deadly cancer in children and adults aged under 40, according to the Brain Tumour Charity.

Brain tumours reduce life expectancies by an average of 27 years, with just 12 per cent of adults surviving five years after diagnosis.

There are two main types, with non-cancerous benign tumours growing more slowly and being less likely to return after treatment.

Cancerous malignant brain tumours can either start in the brain or spread there from elsewhere in the body and are more likely to return.

Brain tumours can cause headachesseizuresnausea, vomiting and memory problems, according to the NHS.

They can also lead to changes in personality weakness or paralysis on one side of the problem and problems with speech or vision.

The nine most common symptoms are:

  1. Headaches
  2. Seizures
  3. Feeling sick
  4. Being sick
  5. Memory problems
  6. Change in personality
  7. Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
  8. Vision problems
  9. Speech problems

If you are suffering any of these symptoms, particularly a headache that feels different from the ones you normally get, you should visit your GP.

Source: NHS

Niamh is now calling for more mental health support for people recovering from brain tumours.

She is still living with the effects of her tumour after it damaged her optic nerve – meaning her vision is impacted – leaving her with no peripheral vision.

She said: “I wish support services, such as those offered by The Brain Tumour Charity, had been flagged up when I was diagnosed and when I really needed them.

“It would have made a massive difference to my life.

“The charity’s digital channels, especially its closed Facebook groups, provide a great place to read about other people’s experiences and connect with people who know what this type of diagnosis is like.

“I was told there was no one or no services that could help me deal with my diagnosis so that was difficult, but then finding the charity has made a massive difference to me.

“Getting to chat to others, read other people’s stories, have that support, it really does make a difference, and that is important.

The Brain Tumour Charity has awarded funding to researchers at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London who are developing a national approach to ensure young people living with the effects of a brain tumour can reach their full potential at school.

11 best foundations for mature skin UK, tried and tested

AS we age, the needs of our skin change and we may notice our favourite foundation no longer seems to work as well.

So which is the best? In this article, we’ve tried and tested the best foundations for mature skin,

Collage of different foundation bottles.

There’s no denying that our skin changes as we grow older, and with it our skincare needs.

That once-loved matte finish now settles into fine lines, or our go-to dewy look appears more oily than softly illuminating.

Our complexion also changes: it may become duller, with dry or flaky patches, dark spots can appear and skin can become more sensitive.

As elastin and collagen production decrease, so skin starts to lose its firmness and we start to notice sagging at the jawline, or deeper bags under our eyes.

That’s why you need a product specially formulated for mature skin – but there’s a lot of choice on the market.

We’ve put a number of leading brands to the test – read on for our top picks of the best foundations for mature skin.

Shoppers looking for hydration for the skin should also read our pick of the best moisturisers for mature skin.

How we tested these products

We tested the best foundations for mature skin with the help of an experienced beauty editor and a member of the Sun Shopping team.

Both tested the individual products over several days as part of their regular skincare routine, taking into account texture, ease of application, coverage and feel

Our beauty editor is in her 40s and tests new foundations regularly as part of her job and there isn’t a foundation formula she hasn’t tried.

On the other hand, our Sun Shopping tester is a newbie to foundation and was looking for a lighter look, rather than full coverage.

Both reviewers had noticed the signs of ageing on their skin, such as fine lines, dark spots, wrinkles and dryness, so were looking for foundations that could deal with those, as well as offer extra skincare benefits.

Best foundations for mature skin: at a glance

Best overall: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, £37 (was £45)

Armani’s iconic foundation remains our firm favourite – it’s flawless, radiant, feels silky-soft and lasts all day.

Better yet, it’s currently on sale at LookFantastic.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation,
£37 (was £47) from LookFantastic

Pros: Flawless finish, radiance-boosting

Cons: Expensive

Rating: 5/5

A modern beauty icon, this foundation is still a staple in the cosmetic bags of beauty editors and elite make-up artists, because 24 years after its launch, it’s like no other.

It achieves the impossible, combining a truly flawless, radiant and even coverage without any heaviness or caking on all types of complexions. Thus, I’ve gone through many bottles, coming back to it time and time again.

The formula is a true medium coverage you can build a little fuller to hide redness, dark spots and even blemishes without it looking noticeable.

And the finish is just like it says on the bottle, delivering a healthy (but not over the top) dose of luminosity to the skin.

What also sets this foundation apart for me is the feel of the coverage. Enriched with skin-loving glycerin for hydration, it’s weightless on the skin and beautifully silky soft to the touch.

Plus, I’m also giving it full marks for longevity. I don’t need powder on top to make it last all-day.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation[/caption]

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation, £52 from Boots

Pros: Hydrating formula, glow finish

Cons: Expensive

Rating: 4.5/5

It’ll come as no surprise that Chanel has a collection of first-class foundations, but this lightweight, glow-inducing coverage is a standout for mature skin, which naturally loses radiance over time.

It’s a medium coverage that I’d say sits on the lighter side. I need very little of the silky formula to even my skin tone and deliver luminosity thanks to magical, light-reflecting powders infused in the foundation.

However, on days when I do need a little more to neutralise imperfections it seamlessly layers to a medium coverage — still staying flawlessly natural looking.

It doesn’t sit in my fine lines or pores, thanks to polymer tech that fills them in and creates a smooth canvas — a little like a built-in primer. And, it stays put until I take it off in the evening.

With glycerol packed into the formula, it defends against dryness too, keeping the skin comfortably hydrated.

It comes in a wide range of shades, so there’s a bottle suitable for all skin tones.

Size: 30ml, Coverage: Light-Medium, Finish: Satin, Shades: 41, SPF: No

Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation

Sabine Wiesel
Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation[/caption]

Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation, £34 from Sephora

Pros: Feels like second skin, natural finish

Cons: Not for those who want to conceal imperfections

Rating: 4.5/5

With a beauty philosophy that revolves around enhancing natural beauty and not covering it up, it’s no surprise Glossier’s foundation is an 89 per cent skincare-led formulation that imparts breathable, natural-looking coverage.

It’s an innovative formulation that works especially well on mature skin because each pigment is coated in amino acids.

In simple terms, this means it fuses with your skin and flexes with its texture so it never sits in lines or creases, always looking impeccable.

For daywear, I like to buff a little veil over my complexion for coverage that looks like a better version of my skin: one that oozes a healthy glow.

And when I feel like I need a little more to reduce redness and soften dark spots, I build it up to a medium coverage with the help of a buffing brush.

Going back to its whopping skincare infusion, it’s the nourishment it also gives the skin that makes it a top pick for dry, mature skin. Hydration comes courtesy of squalane and glycerin packed in the formula that feels like a drink for thirsty skin.

The formula is also teamed with plant extracts that control shine, so you’ll find there’s no chance of it going patchy or having to top up during the day. You can expect it to last the day like it always does for me.

Size: 30ml, Coverage: Light to medium, Finish: Dewy, Shades: 32, SPF: No

Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation

Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation[/caption]

Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation, £42 from Boots

Pros: Radiant skin, silky texture, added SPF

Cons: Can’t vouch for firming claims, lack of darker shades

Rating: 4/5

Made especially with mature skin in mind, this is another radiance-boosting foundation that aims to restore the skin’s youthful glow — both instantly with pigmented coverage and over time with added skincare.

The first thing you notice about this formulation is its creamy, silky texture and how well it glides over the skin, blends and builds. I was left with such a natural, soft-focus finish — both blurring the look of lines and supplying luminosity to the skin.

It balances redness with little coverage and doesn’t completely conceal dark spots, but rather softens the look of them. It keeps skin looking ‘real’ without any heaviness or noticeable cover-up, too.

A combination of plant extracts and hydrating actives work together to plump, nourish and protect the skin, making it feel like skincare rather than a typical foundation to me; it’s super light, breathable and ultra-comfortable.

Plus, with added antioxidants and SPF15 to protect the skin from environmental factors like pollution and the sun’s rays, it ticks so many boxes.

If you’re looking for extra protection against the sunshine, head to our best sun creams round-up.

Clinique Even Better Clinical Serum Foundation

Clinique Even Better Clinical Serum Foundation SPF20[/caption]

Clinique Even Better Clinical Serum Foundation
SPF20, £31.20 (was £39) from Sephora

Pros: Large shade selection, mattifying and radiance-boosting

Cons: Oily T-zones will still need powder

Rating: 4/5

This bestselling foundation for Clinique is ideal for combination or oily skin types, as its satin matte finish leaves behind an all-over radiance, as well as keeping shine at bay where needed.

Clinique calls it full coverage, but I’d say it’s more of a medium that you can build up easily for those days when you need a little extra, without it looking heavy or caking.

What makes this foundation stand out is the serum component of the formula. The skincare-coverage hybrid has been infused with a cocktail of skin-loving superstars, including hydration-boosting hyaluronic acid, brightening vitamin C and salicylic acid for gentle exfoliation.

This means the radiance it gives isn’t just cosmetic. With ongoing use, the antioxidants work to reduce the look of dark spots as well as protect your skin from further hyperpigmentation.

While I can’t vouch for it lasting the 24 hours it promises (as who really needs it to last that long?), I can say from morning to evening it stayed almost flawless. Its longevity is another big plus point.

Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten Color Correcting Foundation

Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten Color Correcting Foundation[/caption]

Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten Color Correcting Foundation, £23.48 (was £27) from QVC

Pros: Powder fit for mature skin, neutralises redness

Cons: Not widely available

Rating: 4/5

A much-loved baked powder foundation from across the pond, this is by US make-up artist Laura Geller whose beauty brand is not as mainstream here in the UK as it is in the US. Yet, you’ll find a top selection at QVC, including this bestseller.

I should first state that I’m not a fan of powder foundations, as I find most of them too drying, making me feel like I’m wearing a mask. They usually cake, look uneven or migrate into lines by midday on me. Not this one though.

Instead, the marbleised powder has a creaminess that applies evenly when buffed outwards and upwards from the middle of the face. It neutralised my redness with just a light dusting and softened the look of my age spots.

You can layer it seamlessly too, but it does require a brush with denser bristles on areas where you need more coverage.

The finish isn’t flat looking either, thanks to the multi-colours that both colour-correct and brighten the skin, perking up dull, tired-looking tones, all while still staying natural-looking and not sitting in creases.

Best of all, it’s infused with hydrating ingredients, so it feels very light on my skin, without any dreaded tightness I often experience with other formulas.

This also works very well as a finishing powder on top of a liquid foundation for the ultimate ‘occasion’ make-up that’s locked in place.

Used alone, it now has a place among my staples for daywear when a speedy buff-and-go routine is called for.

Size: 9g, Coverage: Light to medium, Finish: Semi-matte, Shades: 9, SPF: No

No7 Restore & Renew Serum Foundation SPF30

No7 Restore & Renew Serum Foundation SPF30[/caption]

No7 Restore & Renew Serum Foundation SPF30, £21.95 from Boots

Pros: Infused with skincare, high SPF

Cons: Range needs more shades

Rating: 4/5

Just like the day cream with the same name from the highstreet beauty brand, this is a foundation designed for mature skin and it shows.

It’s a serum foundation that’s pumped with some of the best skin-rejuvenating actives that target visible signs of ageing: vitamin C for skin brightening, peptides for plumping and ceramides for nourishment.

These are just some of the powerful skincare ingredients that provide an instant smoother canvas for pigments and work overtime to renew the skin.

Speaking of pigments, the foundation provides such a sheer glow to my skin with just one pump, but sometimes I like to add another for more of a light-medium finish that hides those telltale signs of ageing.

It has an impressive staying power too; on my skin, it stays fresh looking 9-5, without migrating into pores or lines.

This is simply one of the best serum foundations on the beauty shelves, and at such a purse-friendly price, it’s a win-win.

Size: 30ml, Coverage: Light to medium, Finish: Radiant, Shades: 18, SPF: 30

Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick

Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick[/caption]

Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Hydrating Foundation Stick, £35 from Space NK

Pros: Soft-focus, glowing finish, very natural

Cons: Not for concealing imperfections

Rating: 4/5

Dubbed ‘the queen of the glow’, it’s no surprise make-up genius Charlotte Tilbury’s newest coverage gave my skin a lit-from-within luminosity.

It comes in a handy stick that’s easy to use – simply swipe and buff out with your fingers.

I love how speedy and effortless the application is, but it’s practical too. I can carry it around in my handbag for on-the-go touch-ups or travel with it, as it’s not a liquid.

The coverage is sheer, so it’s not a typical foundation. I find it’s more like a real-life glow filter thanks to its pearlescent pigments that give skin radiance and it evens skin tone so is ideal for everyday wear.

It blurs the look of lines, wrinkles and open pores naturally, but if you’re looking to hide prominent imperfections, you’ll need to team it with a concealer to do so.

Like many of the brand’s foundations, it features hydrating actives ideal for mature skin, this time in the form of hyaluronic acid and vitamin E that pack a moisturising punch.

These ingredients allow the skin to feel smooth and plump, and give the coverage a weightless all-day feel, too.

Maybelline Instant Anti Age Perfector 4-in-1 Glow Makeup, £12.99 from Boots

Pros: Great value

Cons: Small shade selection, slightly sticky

Rating: 4/5

Maybelline may be the go-to for purse-friendly make-up finds, but the budget beauty brand has a string of offerings that compete in performance with luxury brands, including the now iconic Eraser Multi-Use Concealer.

If you love the eye-brightener as much as I do, you’ll also love this lookalike made for the complexion. It has the same built-in sponge applicator, only larger, that makes application as easy as gliding on and buffing out with fingertips.

Just like its name suggests, it’s a multi-use product that can be used as a glow-boosting primer, concealer, highlighter or a light all-over base for the ‘no make-up make-up’ effect. It’s the latter I like to use it for, as it imparts a sheer coverage that can be built up to a natural-looking light one.

What makes it ideal for mature skin is it doesn’t sit in pores or fine lines. It just lightly evens out the skin tone, including redness, while not masking it. So, this isn’t for you if you’re looking for a base that conceals your skin.

It also feels light and hydrating, thanks to the infusion of hyaluronic acid, although there is a slight tackiness to it. But this makes it a great primer for added glow if you want to use it under a heavier foundation.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Sheer Long-Wear Makeup

Estee Lauder Double Wear Sheer Long-Wear Makeup, £39.50 from Look Fantastic

Pros: Both radiant and matte finish, high SPF

Cons: Sheer finish is not for everyone

Rating: 4/5

The iconic Double Wear Foundation needs no introduction with its medium to full budge-proof coverage, but you may not be familiar with this newer version that offers a more natural, very light finish with the same longevity.

A word of warning; this is sheer just as the bottle states, so don’t expect the same coverage as the original. But, that’s what I’m drawn to. It’s skin-like for that au naturel effect that’s so authentic for day-to-day wear.

Evening the skin tone rather than covering it up, you will need concealer layered on more noticeable blemishes and discolouration if you wish to disguise them.

I especially like to use this in the summer, as its oil-free formula also mattifies in all the right places controlling excess oil in the warmer months. It doesn’t even move on my complexion in a sweaty gym session or workout class either.

Plus, it’s loaded with hyaluronic acid and vitamin E to hydrate like a light moisturiser that skin soaks up leaving behind an undetectable, natural and velvety finish — perfect for mature skin that needs all the moisture it can get.

Size: 30ml, Coverage: Sheer, Finish: Matte, Shades: 27, SPF: 20

Lumene Invisible Illumination Serum In Foundation

Look Fantastic

Lumene Invisible Illumination Serum In Foundation, £39.90

Pros: Buildable coverage, brightening, SPF 30, contains skincare ingredients, currently half price

Cons: Only 10 shades, the light finish will not suit everybody

Rating: 4/5

This is perhaps more skincare than foundation, in that the ingredients it contains help nourish and protect your skin.

It provides light coverage and is available in 10 shades. You can also apply more to build the coverage, though one layer was fine for me.

Light-reflecting particles and Nordic Willowherb, have a brightening effect. I also like that it contains hyaluronic acid and vegan collagen to plump and support my skin.

The finish was barely there – my skin but smoother – and I’ll definitely continue to use it.

This is very light though so if you are looking to cover freckles or redness, it’s probably not going to be enough for you.

Size: 30ml, Coverage: Light, Finish: Dewy, Shades: 10, SPF: 30

What ingredients to look for in foundations for mature skin

When selecting a foundation, look for a hydrating formula with skincare ingredients.

A cheap and cheerful product isn’t going to cut it the way it once did; you want your foundation to work hard for you as well as look good.

Go for those containing added extras to help skin hold on to its firmness and elasticity.

For example, vitamin C boosts collagen production. It also brightens and offers some protection against UV rays.

Retinol promotes skin cell turnover, getting rid of dullness and revealing younger skin beneath.

It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, promotes collagen production and reduces inflammation, so helping with breakouts and acne.

Peptides support collagen and elastin production, so improving skin firmness, while ceramides (fats) help keep skin moisturised and smooth.

They also reduce irritation and protect the skin from environmental damage.

Other additions to look out for include everybody’s favourite hyaluronic acid – which keeps skin looking plump by holding moisture in – and niacinamide, which helps smooth the skin, reducing the appearance of pores and ages spots.

Is matte or dewy foundation better for mature skin?

While there is a lot to be said for wearing the foundation that makes you feel the most confident, the type of finish should be considered.

On older skin, matte can look dry. Even when it applies well it has a tendency to slip into fine lines and wrinkles, making them more pronounced due to the build up of product there.

A dewy foundation adds a glow, as well as making your skin appear more hydrated. However it can add too much shine, especially for oily skin.

If this is the case with you then try a semi-matte or satin finish foundation.

How to apply foundation for mature skin

Sometimes less is more and this certainly applies to mature skin.

Full coverage foundation can look too heavy, so consider a lighter product. Build the coverage to a level that suits you while still appearing natural.

Go for products with added skincare benefits, or even choose a hybrid that’s more skincare than foundation, such as the Lumene Invisible Illumination Serum In Foundation we reviewed above or a CC cream.

Applying foundation only to those areas of your face that need it also produces a lighter effect.

And when it comes to the application itself, a brush or sponge is good, though the latter is more blendable, resulting in an even finish.

Finally, complete your base with a touch of concealer.

How to prep mature skin for foundation

Hydrated skin is essential for smooth coverage when it comes to foundation.

The best moisturisers for mature skin contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamin C and niacinamide.

We love Trinny London Bounce Back Intense Peptide Moisturiser. This contains hyaluronic acid, peptides for increased firmness and squalane for a healthy skin barrier.

Don’t forget to apply an eye cream, which helps smooth the delicate skin under your eyes as well as add moisture.

After that and before applying your foundation, you might want to use a primer to reduce the appearance of fine lines – such as Miracle Blur also from Trinny London, much loved by beauty fans and a bestseller since its launch.

Where to buy these foundations in the UK

Foundations are sold in a range of high-street shops and online.

Anywhere that sells make-up will sell foundations, including department stores, such as John Lewis and pharmacy chains such as Boots and Superdrug.

You’ll also find them in shops like Next, M&S and Primark.

Even larger supermarkets will stock a limited selection of less expensive brands, such as Maybelline.

Our favourite beauty websites include LookFantastic, Cult Beauty and Sephora and they all offer a great selection of foundations.

Individual brand websites are also worth a look and don’t forget Amazon, which stocks thousands of different beauty products.

For Laura Geller products, check out QVC, which carries a great selection.

The foundations in our round-up came from:

How much do foundations for mature skin cost?

There are foundations to suit all budgets, from those available for just a few pounds to the eye-wateringly expensive.

The higher the price point the more you can expect from your foundation.

Some contain extra ingredients to benefit your skin and they are going to cost more, as will products from designer brands such as Chanel and Dior.

The cheapest foundation we tested was Maybelline at under £10 and the most expensive was by Chanel, coming in at just under £45.

For those in the mid-price range, expect to pay around £20 – £30.

There are always special offers to be had though so it’s worth keeping an eye out for those.

If you’re after a specific brand then take a look at their website as they may be offering discounts not found elsewhere. Some also offer a discount off your first order when you sign up to their newsletter.

The Verdict: What is the best foundation for mature skin?

For our beauty editor, the best foundation for mature skin has to be Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.

She is a big fan of its buildable coverage and luminous finish, and has purchased many bottles over the years.

“It achieves the impossible, combining a truly flawless, radiant and even coverage without any heaviness or caking on all types of complexions,” she says.

Lumene Invisible Illumination Serum In Foundation gets the vote of our Sun Shopping reviewer.

“I love that this contains vegan collagen and hyaluronic acid to support and hydrate my skin, and SPF 30 to protect it from sun damage.

“I find it easy to apply and as a newcomer to wearing foundation I like the light finish – though you can build the coverage if you wish.”

Police traced body of Greg Monks with CCTV showing final moments before tragic death on stag do in Portugal

PORTUGUESE police discovered CCTV footage showing the final moments of tragic Scot Greg Monks which led them to discover his body.

It shows the 38-year-old jumping over a wall after a night out with his stag do friends at the party resort of Albufeira.

The tragic last known picture of Greg was revealed

New pictures also show the scrubland where he was found on the Algarve after a week-long search.

Cops with sniffer dogs were dispatched to search the steep hillside below luxury villas after a homeowner responded to an appeal by police and Greg’s family to search cameras for images of him.

An autopsy today is expected to firm up the belief he died in a tragic accident after becoming disorientated as he tried to get back to his hotel after a heavy night of drinking with his holiday friends, just hours after travelling to Albufeira for a five-day stag do.

Tributes were continuing to be paid today to the plant mechanic from Glasgow, described as an “amazing guy” by his devastated sister Jillian following yesterday morning’s discovery.

Portuguese police confirmed Greg’s body had been found in an official statement they put out yesterday afternoon after news of the find started leaking out in the local press.

A Portuguese police source revealed today that CCTV supplied by a local homeowner had proved vital in the case.

Greg’s sister had urged residents in Cerro da Aguia, west of Albufeira, to check home cameras and doorbell footage between 2am and 5am on May 28 after it emerged the last sighting of him had been in the hill area dotted with large villas.

The police insider said today: “The GNR police force had requested help from the Polícia Judiciaria force, which confirmed yesterday the missing man’s body had been found.

“They then got given CCTV from one of the villas in the Cerro da Aguia areas, which enabled them to trace him jumping over a wall of a neighbouring property.

“With that information, the searches were immediately moved to the scrubland below the houses.

“Sniffer dogs that were being used by the GNR were brought in again.

“When the dogs were put to work in the area, around 11am, they went straight to a bush where the missing man’s body was laying.”

Another police insider added: “The investigation into exactly how he died is ongoing.

“But all the evidence so far is pointing to the tourist losing all notion of where he was in a place he hadn’t been to before, and under the effects of alcohol jumping over a first wall into a private property and then a second wall in the back garden not realising there was a steep drop the other side.”

Greg’s girlfriend Nicole Kelso, as well as the Scots’ mum and dad, travelled to Albufeira after he went missing.

His sister Jillian, who fronted the appeals for information on his whereabouts before he was found dead, said yesterday his family were “truly heartbroken.”

She added: “Everyone who knows Greg knows how much he will be missed and what an amazing guy he was.”

Portuguese police have not yet released any official statement about why they think he died, although officers have admitted privately they don’t expect the post-mortem to reveal any possible link to a crime.
